BASIC FUNCTION

Provide direct Gastroenterology Advanced Nutrition Service (ANS) care to patients in a variety of health care settings and/or supervise care provided by others; educate, counsel and promote health to patients, the student population and health science students; assist with medical research to further patient care.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Provision of patient Medical/ Care; Collaboration with Care Team:

Perform /order medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications under a collaborative practice agreement. 

Consult/collaborate with other care team members. The Advanced nutrition uses a team-based approach

Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues. 

Influence others to adopt best practices.

See inpatient consults for patients with complex nutritional needs, frequently requiring TPN

Provider consultation of patient with gastrointestinal illnesses that affect their nutritional status or needs. 

Participate in adjusting parenteral nutrition orders each morning and team huddles. 

Provide care coordination of both inpatients and outpatients with complex nutritional needs.  

Follow-up daily on inpatient ANS consults. 

Provide post discharge follow-up for all ANS patients. 

See outpatient consults in DHC or IRL clinic. 

Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession and Education:

Complete patient medical records, reports, and forms to record treatment for treatment record and billing purposes.

Improve quality of care by performing chart reviews and participating on performance improvement committees.

Education/ Health/ Promotion/ Research:

Provide health education to patients and medical education to health professionals students and residents. 

Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff.

Administration/ Human Resources Management:

Establish and maintain procedures and systems to assure staff compliance with policies and standards of care. 

Initiate corrective action as needed. 

Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations. 

Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications. 

May provide feedback and coaching to other team members to assure quality of specialized care. 

Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff. 

May have budget responsibilities for unit supervised.

Education/License Requirements:

Physician Assistant (PA):  Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA. 

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP):  A Master’s degree is required.  A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred.  If a Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required. 

ARNP - Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.

ARNP - Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required. 

Required Qualifications:

Reasonable (1-3 years) experience in area of practice is preferred or previous experience in specified hospital specialty area or demonstrated knowledge of area of clinical practice.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. 

Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for patients in an inpatient setting is desirable.

Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is desirable.

Experience managing length of stay, improving resource utilization and decreasing costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care is desirable.

Experience with the use of EPIC is desirable.
