The University of Iowa Health Care, department of Family Medicine is seeking a PA/ARNP Hospitalist to provide comprehensive inpatient medical care and management for hospitalized patients within the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Perform direct patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic services, under physician supervision while exercising appropriate autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided. Function independently to assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate care for patients admitted to Family Medicine inpatient services, including observation patients. Facilitate transitions of care across the continuum, promote efficient resource utilization, and support high-quality, patient-centered care. Participate in the education of students, residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Provide inpatient and observation care responsibilities as directed by a supervising physician.
  • Obtain comprehensive patient histories, perform physical examinations, and assess, diagnose, treat, and document acute and chronic medical conditions affecting hospitalized patients.
  • Admit, evaluate, and manage patients on Family Medicine inpatient services.
  • Facilitate transitions of care from the Emergency Department, outpatient clinics, and other referral sources to inpatient and observation services.
  • Order, perform, and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies, laboratory tests, imaging studies, electrocardiograms, pulmonary function tests, and other clinical studies.
  • Prescribe and manage medications, treatments, rehabilitative services, diets, and other therapeutic interventions.
  • Perform approved procedures within scope of practice and departmental guidelines.
  • Evaluate and respond to urgent and emergent medical situations.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, pharmacists, therapists, social workers, care coordinators, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Coordinate discharge planning and ensure timely communication with primary care providers, consultants, patients, families, and community resources.
  • Promote efficient use of resources while maintaining high-quality patient outcomes and patient-centered care. Refer patients to specialty and subspecialty providers as clinically indicated.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, disease prevention, medications, and follow-up care.
  • Direct and coordinate patient care activities consistent with the plan of care.
  • Maintain awareness of healthcare facilities, agencies, and community resources to facilitate appropriate patient referrals and discharge planning.
  • Foster effective communication among team members to improve patient outcomes and continuity of care.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, patients, families, and the public.
  • Complete patient medical records, reports, billing documentation, and other required records in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Comply with departmental, hospital, university, state, and federal policies and regulations.
  • Participate in chart reviews, quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, and performance improvement committees.
  • Support evidence-based practice and contribute to initiatives that improve patient care, reduce length of stay, and optimize resource utilization.
  • Participate in the education of medical students, physician associate students, residents, fellows, and other healthcare trainees.
  • Provide health education to patients and families.

Pay Grade: 7A

Education/License Requirements:

  •  Completion of ARNP (Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner) or PA-C (Physician Associate) degree.

  • Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP or PA-C in state of Iowa is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous clinical experience providing patient care to adults and children in a primary care setting or previous experience in a specified hospital specialty area or demonstrated knowledge of the area of clinical practice.

  • Demonstrated ability to assess, diagnose, and manage medical conditions across a broad spectrum of inpatient care.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment

Desired Qualifications:

  • One or more years of post-training clinical experience as a Physician Associate or ARNP is highly desirable.

  • Experience in hospital medicine, inpatient family medicine, internal medicine,urgent care, emergency medicine, or related inpatient practice settings.

  • Experience managing hospitalized adult and pediatric patients and coordinating transitions of care.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Epic is highly desirable.

  •  Experience participating in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives.

  • Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

  • Experience teaching students, residents, or other healthcare learners.

  • Demonstrated ability to promote efficient resource utilization while maintaining high-quality, patient-centered care
