This term, half-time, grant-funded position will run from the date of hire through October 31, 2027, and is contingent on the availability of grant funds. The Labor Educator will perform work consistent with the scope of the grant, such as assist with recruitment activities for the Labor Center’s Apprenticeship Readiness Programs (ARPs), teach classes for ARPs, make presentations to schools and community groups, coordinate with community nonprofit and labor partners, and help graduates of prior ARPs gain entry to and succeed in Registered Apprenticeship training programs. The educator will also be responsible for developing and updating data systems to track progress toward grant deliverables.
There is an expectation that the person in this position will maintain effective, civil, and respectful working relationships with the University of Iowa campus community and uphold the University’s commitment to creating welcoming and respectful environments for all.
Key Areas of Responsibilities
- Teach non-credit labor education classes in off-campus community spaces in relevant areas, such as registered apprenticeship programs, collective bargaining, communications, labor and employment law, labor history, worker leadership development, labor-related public policy issues, safety and health, and other workplace issues.
- Design, write and produce labor education materials including replicable curricula and instructional materials appropriate for adult learners.
- Conduct applied research for Iowa workers and the organizations that serve them and supervise graduate research assistant activities.
- Participate in departmental decision-making processes and administrative functions.
- Plan, promote and administer non-credit labor education classes, seminars and conferences.
- Develop and maintain close working relationships with local, state, regional and national labor organizations and community nonprofits.

Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience in labor studies, industrial relations, industrial technology, adult education, occupational safety and health, or other relevant fields.
- At least one year of experience teaching labor-related topics and producing high-quality educational materials.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct applied research relevant to workers and their organizations.
- Prior program coordination and administration experience.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.
- Willingness to travel and work weekends and evenings.
- Demonstrated understanding of labor relations, labor and employment laws, and registered apprenticeship pathways in the construction sector.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience conducting classes as part of an Apprenticeship Readiness Program.
- Demonstrated ability to lead effective educational programs with high school students and working adults with differing perspectives.
