The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is seeking a Pediatric Hospitalist (PA/ARNP) to provide medical care and management for children with cancer and blood disorders, including recipients of bone marrow transplantation and cellular therapies, on the University of Iowa Dance Marathon 11th floor of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.  The hospitalist will function independently to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for pediatric inpatient and observation populations while triaging concerns from patients in the outpatient setting. Focus on the caring for hospitalized patients to manage care and length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care. The position requires staffing nights, weekends and holidays on a rotational basis to be determined according to clinical service needs.

 

Duties to include:

 

Provision of Medical Care; Collaboration with Care Team under Direction and Supervision of Attending Physician:

 

  • Facilitate transition of care for new admissions and between services as required by patient care needs (Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Surgery, Pathology, Radiology, etc.)
  • Perform /order medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including Lumbar Puncture and Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy.
  •  Prescribe, dispense and/or deliver medication including chemotherapy and schedule II-V controlled substances.
  • Consult/collaborate with other care team members; including fellows, residents, physicians, nurses, etc.
  • Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues.
  • Influence others to adopt best practices.
  • Triage phone calls and questions within outpatient management.

 

Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession and Education:

 

  • Complete patient medical records, reports, and forms to record treatment for treatment record and billing purposes.
  • Participate in or lead Divisional or Departmental quality improvement projects.

 

Education/ Health/ Promotion/ Research:

 

  • Provide health education to patients and families.
  • Provide medical education to health professions students and residents.
  • Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff.
  • Maintain knowledge of and follow clinical practice guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

 

Administration/ Human Resources Management:

 

  • Establish and maintain procedures and systems to assure staff compliance with policies and standards of care.
  • May serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations.
  • Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications.
  • May provide feedback and coaching to other team members to assure quality of care.

 

The department intends to hire for one position from either Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Hospitalist, or Pediatric Physician Assistant Hospitalist, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.

About Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation

 

The division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology and Transplantation is a pioneer in the care and treatment of childhood cancers and blood disorders. The team includes nine faculty members, three advanced practice providers and numerous other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive, disease-focused, multidisciplinary care for patients. The mission of the division is to treat and cure children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases who live in Iowa by delivering personalized multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art care, through participation both in nationally and locally designed protocols. We are seeking physician assistants and nurse practitioners who will be able to autonomously plan, deliver, and evaluate health care to patients on our unit under the direction and supervision of our faculty.

 

About University of Iowa Dance Marathon Pediatric Cancer Center

 

Within University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, University of Iowa Dance Marathon (UIDM) Pediatric Cancer Center treats children, adolescents and young adults with cancer, blood disorders and patients who receive bone marrow transplantation and other cellular therapies. UIDM Pediatric Cancer Center was designed for the comfort and convenience of patients and families combining inpatient and outpatient care on the same floor. The dedicated inpatient unit has 18 private inpatient rooms each equipped with its own high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. The center also includes the only pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) program in the state of Iowa.

Qualifications

Requirements for ARNP candidates:

 

Education Required:

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP):  A Master’s degree is required.  A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred.  If a Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required.

 

Experience Requirements

  • Current certification as Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with a complex patient population and diverse faculty, staff and students is required.
  • Prior direct patient care experience in area of pediatrics.

 

Highly Desirable Qualifications

  • Clinical rotation or experience in Pediatric Oncology is highly desirable.
  • Experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for patients in a Pediatric inpatient or acute care setting is highly desirable.
  • Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is highly desirable.
  • Experience managing length of stay, improving resource utilization and decreasing costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care   is highly desirable.

Requirements for PA candidates:

Education Required:

Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA. 

Experience Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff and students is required.
  • Prior direct patient care experience in area of pediatrics.

 

Highly Desirable Qualifications

  • Clinical rotation or experience in Pediatric Oncology is highly desirable.
  • Experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for patients in a Pediatric inpatient setting is highly desirable.
