The Manager of Pharmacy Informatics will provide leadership and direction to pharmacy practice specialists and application developers within the pharmacy informatics team. This role also includes support for pharmacy practice specialists at UI Community Connect sites and requires extensive collaboration with UI Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) to strengthen those partnerships.

The Manager will work closely with Pharmacy Department leadership to promote the safe and optimal use of medications through effective utilization of information systems, automation, and data. Collaboration with leaders from departments outside of Pharmacy is essential to ensure the successful planning and implementation of pharmacy informatics initiatives. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Pharmacy Informatics, Business Intelligence, and Automation.

This position requires obtaining Epic certifications in Willow Inpatient, Willow Ambulatory, and Cogito. In addition, the individual must possess extensive knowledge of the Epic system and be able to support staff with build and configuration needs.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills, personnel supervision experience, and a proactive approach to system evaluation and improvement. Key responsibilities include strategic planning, staff development, and cross-functional collaboration. This role requires a high degree of autonomy, innovation, active listening, and adaptability in problem-solving and decision-making.

Position Responsibilities:

    Pharmaceutical Care Operations

    • Assists in planning and delivering pharmacy services, with a focus on information system management. Assigns tasks to staff and monitors individual and team progress.
    • Partners with the Business Support team to ensure effective systems are in place for managing revenue cycle, 340B compliance, and supply chain operations. Oversees data management and the creation of dashboards to support performance monitoring.
    • Collaborates with pharmacy and organizational leaders to coordinate and standardize the use of information systems and automation.
    • Provides overall guidance and oversight of information system utilization.
    • Works closely with Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) on the implementation and optimization of the electronic health record (EHR).
    • Ensures that staff maintain competency with the EHR and related systems.
    • Fosters an environment that promotes high performance, collaboration, and teamwork.

    Education

    • Delivers education to departmental leaders and other stakeholders on the use and optimization of information systems.
    • Serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents.
    • Provides didactic instruction at the College of Pharmacy as needed.
    • Communicates system upgrades and changes to affected stakeholders in a timely and effective manner.

    Health Care System Improvement

    • Collaborates with the leadership team to evaluate staff-identified concerns, developing safe and effective solutions aligned with departmental and organizational goals.
    • Provides guidance on time management and ensures appropriate allocation of time and resources to various projects.
    • Partners with departmental leaders to identify priorities and assist in planning new programs and services.
    • Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of clinical and technical initiatives in collaboration with other department leaders.

    Compliance and Regulatory Management

    • Ensures compliance with regulatory standards and federal, state, and local laws related to medication safety and information systems.
    • Oversees the configuration of information systems to support compliance requirements.
    • Assists departmental leaders in developing compliant workflows and practices in accordance with regulatory guidance.
    • Serves as a subject matter expert on medication safety and system-related opportunities and participates in relevant committees as needed.

    Human Resource Management

    • Recruits, develops, and manages the performance of assigned staff.
    • Leads team and staff meetings within assigned areas of responsibility.
    • Ensures staff adherence to UI policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
    • Conducts performance evaluations and develops improvement plans as necessary.
    • Provides support for day-to-day problem-solving and critical thinking.
    • Coordinates team coverage to maintain consistent service during absences.
    • Monitors staff assignments and responsibilities, providing coaching and disciplinary action when required.
    • Evaluates employee engagement and implements initiatives to improve satisfaction.

    Financial Management

    • Monitors assigned budgets, including expense management and personnel utilization.
    • Understands billing processes for both take-home prescriptions and medications administered in inpatient and ambulatory care settings.
    • Collaborates with departmental leaders to develop mechanisms for tracking and reporting drug expenditures and revenue.

    Drug Utilization and Review (DUR) / Business Intelligence

    • Supports business intelligence initiatives by developing dashboards and performance monitoring tools.
    • Participates in data collection and analysis to identify trends and issues related to drug utilization.
    • Stays current with data systems and tools used to deliver actionable medication use insights to department leadership

    .Effective Communications

    • Communicates clearly and effectively with stakeholders across various levels.
    • Tailors documents and presentations to meet the needs of different audiences.
    • Maintains clarity and focus during discussions and written communications.

      Education Requirements:

      • Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
      • Current license or eligibility to be licensed as Pharmacist by Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

      Required Qualifications:

      • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Administration Residency or minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a complex clinical pharmacy environment.
      • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
      • Job-Related experience in retail pharmacy 
      • Ability and willingness to act as preceptor
      • Job-related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence is required
      • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

      Desired Qualifications:

      • Experience in a health-system outpatient/retail pharmacy setting is highly desirable.
      • Experience with automation/technology, human resources management, project management and Epic electronic health record is highly desirable.
      • A Master of Science in Pharmacy or healthcare/management related advanced degree such as an MHA, MPH or MBA is desirable.
      • Pharmacy accreditation experience (e.g. TJC, URAC)
