The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Manager.  

This position will provide front line management and support for pharmacy services provided at Medical Center Downtown campus. This individual will focus on the planning, organization, directing and evaluating the pharmacy clinical and operational servicesThis person is responsible for leading and managing associated personnel and programs in collaboration with pharmacy department leadership, and leaders outside of pharmacy such as physician and nursing groups as well as hospital administration.

University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage the provision of pharmaceutical care (clinical and operational) to patients receiving care at Medical Center Downtown.  
  • Assist with and carry-out departmental goals consistent with UI Health Care standards of excellence as well as the hospital's mission and strategic plan. 
  • Manage the provision of safe, timely, efficient, effective, and patient-centered medication related services. 
  • Implement and monitor technology associated with the provision of Pharmaceutical Care for patients to assure safe and cost-effective processes. 
  • Assist with implementing systems allowing pharmacists, technicians, and pharmacy support staff to work at the top of their license or certification.   
  • Collaborate with pharmacy management regarding drug shortage/product procurement difficulties as well as other members of the health care team (physicians, nurses, etc.) to develop successful strategies to ensure the availability of medications to the patient populations 

Pharmaceutical Care Operations 

  • Support and manage the departmental budgeting process, monitor, and provide input on capital planning, wage and salary budgets, medication expenses, and reimbursement issues. 
  • Implement strategies where patient outcomes for medication therapy are positively impacted by pharmacy staff. 
  • Advocate for pharmacists to be active and critical members of the healthcare team. 
  • Develop and lead the implementation of best practice standards and established guidelines. 

Education  

  • Assist with the guidance and support of the experiential education of pharmacy residents, student pharmacists, and pharmacy technician training students. 
  • In conjunction with area managers/directors, provide and/or coordinate educational activities for pharmacy staff and other health-system providers (providers, nurses, etc.) regarding pharmacy or medication related topics. 

 

Health Care System Improvement  

  •    Identify, develop, and implement innovative patient care services to address the needs of patients within UI Health Care as well as across the continuum of care, including collaborative relationships with community pharmacies and critical access hospitals. 
  • Participate in various committees throughout UI Health Care including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. 
  • Participate in medication safety teams such to proactively identify problems in the medication use system and create effective solutions. 

Compliance and Regulatory Management, Performance Improvement 

  • Comply with state and federal regulatory and legal requirements relating to medication use systems and assist in the accreditation process by ensuring that the organizations medication-use process meets the applicable medication management standards put forth by CMS/TJC including conditions of participation standards and NPSGs. 
  • Track and report on clinical and operational initiatives, compliance, and performance improvement efforts. 
  • Ensure all aspects of the management of controlled substances (record keeping, ordering, storage, distribution, security, etc.) meet federal and state standards. 

Medication Use  

  • Manage the oversight of systems to provide medication information to organization-wide stakeholders such as the Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee. 
  • Participate in collecting and evaluating data to identify potential medication use problems.   
  • Create and implement programs to decrease medication expenses and improve inventory management.  

Human Resource Management 

  • Direct the recruitment, selection, evaluation, and retention efforts of professional, technical and student staff. 
  • Create and publish the staffing schedule to ensure appropriate coverage of pharmaceutical care operations, including management of unplanned staffing needs. 
  • Perform activities involving payroll and leave approval. 
  • Develop, manage, and assess the performance of staff. 

Project Management  

  • Review and evaluate medication event data for identification of trends and areas of improvement. 
  • Gather data and assess need for new services, including but not limited to, new technology, equipment, facilities, and clinical services, to meet patient care and safety needs. 
  • Participate in project planning, development and design. 

Supervision received: 

  • General supervision is received from the Pharmacy Director at Medical Center Downtown.  

Supervision exercised: 

  • Administrative and functional supervision exercised over the clinical pharmacist and pharmacy technicians, trainees and students.   

Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule:  Monday - Friday Days

Pay Grade: 7A

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree.  
  • Current license or eligibility to be licensed as Pharmacist by Iowa Board of Pharmacy required by date of hire.  
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Administration Residency or minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a pharmacy environment.  
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.  
  • Ability and willingness to act as preceptor.  
  • Job-related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence is required.  
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.   

Desired Qualifications:

  • Job-related experience in acute care pharmacy.  
  • A Master of Science in Pharmacy or healthcare/management related advanced degree such as an MHA, MPH or MBA is desirable.  
  • Experience with automation/technology, human resources management, project management and Epic electronic health record is highly desirable
