The University of Iowa Health Care, Iowa River Landing clinic is seeking a patient centered individual for our 100% Phlebotomy Technician II in the Pathology department. Under direct supervision, performs phlebotomy and a variety of difficult venipuncture procedures.  Completes laboratory tasks related to routine phlebotomy labeling procedures, telephone inquiries, and distribution of phlebotomy supplies. Instructs new staff on phlebotomy techniques as needed, and monitors progress of trainees (Phlebotomist I’s). 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs all phlebotomy duties as assigned
  • Performs complex and difficult specimen procurement processes
  • Instruct and train others in phlebotomy techniques. Monitor specimen collection techniques of Phlebotomist I’s.  Provide training and education on correct specimen procurement techniques
  • Responds to or may direct responses to inquiries concerning phlebotomy policies and procedures
  • Performs data entry and computer tasks related to order entry and phlebotomy. Performs data entry to accession laboratory specimens using laboratory guidelines for accuracy
  • Checks laboratory specimens for appropriate labeling
  • Labels specimens as directed by each laboratory SOP
  • Completes all accessioning requirements for pre-accessioned samples including data entry, compilation, and printing of labels/collection lists and organization of phlebotomy requisitions, labels, and lists. 

 

Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: 40 hours will be accomplished between 7:00am-8:30pm, Monday-Thursday and between 7:00am-5:30pm on Fridays.  Position will also be a part of a Saturday and holiday rotation. Additional hours as needed.

Location: UI Health Care - Iowa River Landing, Coralville, Iowa

Rotations: Saturday and Holiday Rotation.

Pay Grade: 06

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • High school graduation or equivalent and
  • Current certification as a Phlebotomist Technician by ACA (American Certification Agency), AMT (American Medical Technologists), ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology), NCA (National Center for Competency Testing), NCCT (National Credentialing Agency) or NHA (National Healthcareer Association), and
  • Six months full-time experience performing phlebotomy work, or completion of a Phlebotomy training program.

The department intends to hire for one position from either Phlebotomy Technician II, requisition #26001870, or Phlebotomy Technician I, requisition #26001875, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.
