University of Iowa Health Care Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology Oncology is seeking an Physician Assistant to assist in the management of patients with hematological disorders predominately in the outpatient setting at The University of Iowa Healthcare under the direction of the staff physicians at the University of Iowa.  Enroll patients in clinical studies aimed at introducing new therapies for such patients.  Evaluate patients and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including bone marrow biopsy/aspiration and lumbar puncture.  Majority of the duties will be providing care for outpatients; some of the duties will include working with inpatients needing to be seen on consultation.  Duties to include:

 

 

 

Provide care responsibilities as directed by a supervising physician. 

   

Obtain medical history and perform physical examination. 

 

Perform or assist in and interpret the performance of laboratory and related studies. 

   

Assist in delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care. 

   

Refer patients to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated by the patients’ problems. 

   

Evaluate, treat and institute procedures essential to providing an appropriate response to emergency medical problems. 

   

Maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies and resources in order to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients. 

   

Assist in the ordering of drugs and supplies, record keeping, and maintenance of equipment. 

   

Admit patients to hospital or health care facility as directed. 

   

Order and interpret laboratory tests and x-ray procedures. 

   

Demonstrate satisfactory knowledge of the management of patients in the designated clinical areas assigned.

   

Provide care to patients with hematologic disorders.  Such care will at times be independent and at times closely coordinated with, but always under the supervision of faculty in the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Blood & Marrow Transplantation.  

   

Perform and document evaluation of both new and returning patients, including complete history and physical examination and, appropriate orders for treatment.  

 

Provide overall medical care, functioning independently to assess, perform medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and completion of patient care orders, under the supervision of the staff attending. Prescribe medications, including antineoplastic order and controlled substances. Complete written medical record documentation.

   

Perform procedures on patients such as suture removal, performing bone marrow biopsies, administering intrathecal therapy, use of indwelling CNS catheters, diagnostic lumbar punctures, management (removal and repair) of indwelling catheters, and perform insertion of peripheral inserted central catheters (PICC lines) for the adult population at UIHC.

   

Perform duties appropriate to a physician’s practice. 

   

Mentor and educate fellows, residents, APP and medical students (and other students)  as to the needs and issues of outpatient and inpatient population management and optimal resource utilization.  

   

Facilitate communication with internal and external health care providers. This includes obtaining relevant information from referring physicians and responding to patient calls.  

 

Assist in the preparation of chemotherapy and/or other complex medication orders.  Counsel patients regarding drugs, side effects, risks and benefits.

 

Complete medical record documentation and billing information in a timely manner, consistent with University of Iowa Physicians and Department policies. 

  

Submit charges for services rendered ensuring that medical record documentation supports those charges.  

  

Assist with and participate in clinical research and/or trials. 

  

May set up the research design, coordinate the research, and tabulate and analyze the results. 

   

Participate in committees within the division, department, College of Medicine and University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. 

   

Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.

Salary: 96,000 - Commensurate https://hr.uiowa.edu/pay/pay-plans/seiu-pay-plan.

Education Required

Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.

 

Required Qualifications 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

 

Desirable Qualifications

Experience in hematology/oncology is desired.
