Physician Assistant/ ARNP Hospitalist - Radiology
Position Summary
The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Radiology is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (PA-C or ARNP) to provide comprehensive patient care across both outpatient and inpatient settings. This position will primarily focus on evaluating, managing, and providing direct care to patients receiving services through the Department of Radiology. This position will see patients in an outpatient clinic at Medical Center Downtown and support procedural-based care for both outpatients and inpatients at Medical Center University and Medical Center Downtown. This role works collaboratively with physicians and multidisciplinary care teams to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care throughout the radiology experience.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
- Directs pre-procedural preparation and postprocedural care of patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional examinations; diagnostic examinations including fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, mammography, PET/CT, and magnetic resonance imaging
- Performs and interprets fluoroscopic procedures and ultrasound examinations (angiographic and interventional)
- Assists Interventional Radiology and/or Body Imaging faculty in growing and expanding our adult and pediatric procedural-based services
- Demonstrates competency in the principles of practice-based learning and improvement by participation in departmental QA/QI initiatives
- Demonstrates core competencies in angiographic and interventional (arterial and venous) procedural techniques
- Obtains medical history and performs physical examination
- Obtains procedural consent, performs or assists in procedures, and assumes responsibility for charting and dictation
- Performs and/or assists with Fluoroscopic arterial and venous interventions
- Performs and/or assists with Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, or Fluoroscopic guided biopsies
- Performs and/or assists with Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, or Fluoroscopic vascular access
- Performs and/or assists with Ultrasound-guided paracentesis and thoracentesis
- Performs and/or assists with Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, or Fluoroscopic drainage catheter placements, removal, and maintenance
- Performs and/or assists with Ultrasound-guided Fine Needle Aspirations
- Performs and/or assists with Fluoroscopic-guided GI studies (such as esophagrams and cookie swallows)
- Determines appropriate procedural-based approach and/or diagnostic exam protocol
- Assesses, assists, diagnoses and treats medical symptoms or findings
- Assists in delivery of services to patients requiring continued care
- Refers patients to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated by the patients’ symptoms and/or medical state
- Evaluates, treats, and institutes procedures essential to providing an appropriate response to emergency medical problems
- Maintains awareness of health facilities, agencies and resources in order to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients
- Assists in the ordering of drugs and supplies, record keeping and maintenance of equipment
- Admits patients to hospital or health care facility as directed
- Orders diets and post-procedure care instructions
- Orders medications and administer drugs
- Directs other medical personnel and health professionals in the execution of patient care
- Performs duties appropriate to a physician’s practice
- Participates in educating fellows, residents and medical students of various programs
- Assists with on-call schedule, orders sets, dictation and patient discharge instructions
- Evaluates radiographic medical images, reviews preliminary reports and images
- Prepares technical reports that will be reviewed and signed off by the supervising physician
- Participates in patient management, including ordering of additional imaging procedures, following review with the supervising physician
- Assists with and participates in clinical research and/or trials
- May set up the research design, coordinate the research and tabulate and analyze the results
- Participates in committees within the division, department, College of Medicine and University of Iowa Health Care
- Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public
Supervision Received
- Supervision is received by a physician certified by the Board of Medical Examiners
Supervision Exercised
- Functional and administrative supervision may be exercised over support staff and students

Typical Schedule
- Monday through Friday; 0700-1530; One weeknight on-call shift per week from home and callback responsibilities as needed

Required Qualifications
- Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational Program
- NCCPA Certification
- BLS Certification
- 1-3 years of relevant working experience
- Experience with computer order entry, use of order sets and protocols
- Experience with sterile technique and infection prevention
- History of building interdepartmental relationships and exceptional teamwork
- Strong clinical skills
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time for procedures
- Commitment to fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work environment
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in radiology
- Experience working in an academic medical center
- Understanding of safe work practices in the radiology area
- Active Iowa Board of Pharmacy Certificate of Registration for Iowa Controlled Substances Act
- Active Controlled Substance Registration Certificate through the Department of Justice (DEA)
- ACLS certification
- PALS certification
