The University of Iowa Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking a Physician Assistant for our General Obstetrics and Gynecology Division. The PA functions as a provider of gynecology services in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics.  Gynecology services include history taking and health assessment, physical exams, both in clinic and exams under anesthesia in the operating suites, management of contraceptive needs and hormone replacement therapy, evaluating low acuity gynecologic problems, ordering and interpreting routine laboratory tests; undertaking diagnostic procedures such as endometrial biopsy and vulvar biopsy, insertion and removal of contraceptive devices and providing general health education and education about particular health problems or situations. 

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides consultation, comprehensive treatment planning and a broad range of services for patients with normal and high-risk pregnancies and for gynecology, including oncology and reproductive endocrinology. Our comprehensive medial, surgical, and nursing services span the full spectrum of all obstetric and gynecologic patients at University of Iowa Health Care.  In addition to patient care, the department is noted for its strong educational programs for medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians.  Basic and clinical research in reproductive medicine is an important departmental activity.   

Position Responsibilities:

  • Prepares complete detailed and accurate patient histories for wellness maintenance, contraceptive needs, menopausal symptoms, or minor gynecologic problems. 
  • Document findings on appropriate chart form which is recorded in patient medical record.  This may involve dictating clinical notes. 
  • Perform, order and interpret routine laboratory tests; perform follow-up notification to patient about laboratory results, with particular attention to abnormal results. 
  • Prescribe medications in specified circumstances. 
  • Perform follow-up telephone consultation or contacts patients by mail regarding test results, and makes arrangements for follow-up as indicated.  Follows-up on patients who do not return for scheduled appointments.  

Required Qualifications:

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA. 
  • 1-3 years of experience as an APP in Women's Health.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and other customers

  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies and procedures
