The Department of Urology is seeking a full time Physician Assistant.  The PA, after demonstrating competency and under the guidance, supervision and discretion of the supervising physician, will provide direct patient care to patients in an outpatient care setting exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided to support quality care and positive patient outcomes of pediatric urology patients.

  

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Exercises clinical competency and expertise in area of specialization.
  • Functions independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for a defined patient population.
  • Provide overall medical care, functioning independently to assess, perform medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and completion of patient care orders, under the supervision of the staff attending.
  • Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the EMR and other records for compliance, billing and other regulatory standards. 
  • Perform and document initial evaluation of new and returning patients, including complete history and physical examination and, appropriate orders for treatment.  This includes initial evaluations of patient symptoms.  Provide specialized care independently or jointly with attending physician as appropriate.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, imagining studies and other related studies.
  • Prescribe, order and administer medications.
  • Collaborates with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care.
  • Promotes health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.
  • Conducts independent clinics for selected urology return patients.
  • Provides anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families.
  • Documents patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generates appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence.
  • Initiates and coordinates referrals to other health care team members or agencies as needed.
  • Serves in a consultative or resource capacity to other divisions, the department, and the community as needed.
  • Serves in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.
  • Participates in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
  • Assumes responsibility for administrative activities and special projects as assigned.
  • Contributes toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals as delegated.
  • Participates and contributes to activities that enhance clinical knowledge and expertise.
  • Participates in educational activities in the department, hospital, community and professional organizations.

Required Qualifications

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA. 
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills is required.
  • Evidence of ability to function with a high degree of independence while actively collaborating with other health care team members. 

  Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous patient care experience in urology. 
  • Demonstrated experience providing overall medical care and medical management for patients in an outpatient care setting.
  • Knowledge of UI Health Care policies and procedures.
