The University of Iowa Healthcare Pharmacy Department is seeking a Prescription Home Delivery Driver. The UI Health Care Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Delivery Driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and accurate delivery of prescription medications to patients. This role will perform medication deliveries using software-based delivery routes, loading/unloading activities, transporting medications using proper handling techniques, and ensuring that sensitive, fragile, and temperature-controlled items are maintained appropriately throughout transit. The Delivery Driver verifies patient identity upon delivery, obtains required signatures, documents confirmation of delivery and/or any delivery issues, and maintains strict confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations. Additionally, the Delivery Driver is responsible for ensuring a clean, orderly, and properly maintained vehicle. This position requires strong decision-making skills, attention to detail, and the ability to safely operate vehicles and related equipment while adhering to all applicable motor vehicle laws and regulations. This position will work eight (8) hour shifts between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Position Responsibilities

  •  Transport Prescription Medications
    • Sort and organize prescription deliveries based on assigned routes and priorities.
    • Retrieve and navigate daily delivery routes using designated software systems.
    • Transport medications to patients in a timely manner while adhering to all safety and traffic regulations.
    • Provide delivery updates and communicate estimated arrival times to patients when appropriate.

       

  • Proper Handling and Transport of Pharmacy Items
    • Load and unload medications and pharmacy supplies using appropriate handling techniques.
    • Maintain integrity of sensitive, fragile, and temperature-controlled medications during transport.
    • Secure packages to prevent damage, loss, or contamination.
    • Follow established protocols for handling specialized or high-risk medications.
  • Maintain Professional and Confidential Delivery Practices
    • Verify patient identity upon delivery using approved identification methods.
    • Obtain required signatures and complete delivery documentation accurately.
    • Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
    • Provide courteous and professional communication with patients during all interactions.
  • Ensure Safe Operation of Delivery Vehicles
    • Perform routine vehicle inspections prior to and after deliveries.
    • Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle interior and exterior.
    • Refuel vehicles as needed and monitor overall vehicle condition.
    • Report maintenance issues, safety concerns, or incidents promptly.
    • Deliver vehicle(s) to motor pool for all scheduled oil changes and service checks.
  • Coordinate with Pharmacy Staff and Address Delivery Issues
    • Communicate delivery status, delays, and route changes with designated pharmacy staff.
    • Report unsuccessful delivery attempts and follow appropriate procedures.
    • Collaborate with team members to resolve logistical or patient-related concerns.
    • Utilize communication tools and software systems effectively.
  • Adhere to Regulatory and Safety Standards
    • Follow all applicable motor vehicle laws and organizational policies.
    • Comply with HIPAA and patient privacy regulations.
    • Adhere to proper documentation and chain-of-custody procedures for medications.
    • Demonstrate sound judgment in prioritizing deliveries and handling unexpected situations.
  • Assist with Pharmacy and Logistical Operations
    • Assist with preparation and organization of delivery supplies and materials.
    • Support pharmacy prescription delivery preparation workflow during non-delivery periods.
    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of delivery and storage areas.
    • Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental operations.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • One year experience driving trucks.

  • Possession of the class (class A, B, C or D) of drivers license appropriate to vehicle driven and/or materials transported.

Special Qualifications:

  • Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy prior to the start of employment.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • High school degree (or equivalent)
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
