Research Archaeologist
Qualifications:
Education or Equivalency Required
A Master’s degree with an emphasis in archaeological studies or related field, such as soils science, geomorphology, or architectural history.
Required Qualifications
· If holds a Master's in archeology, applicant must meet minimum professional qualifications for archaeology as defined by the Department of the Interior (36CFR 61).
· At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in their field.
· At least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in their field.
· Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion on time and on budget.
· Understanding and ability to comply with the Association of Iowa Archaeologists Guidelines: http://aiarchaeologist.org/guidelines/.
· Extensive experience with MS Word and Excel for reporting and data collecting and management.
· Experience with GIS and GPS mapping.
· Possession of a valid state or commercial driver's license, and the ability to meet University Fleet Safety Standards.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
· If applicant has non-archaeology degree (such as soils science, geomorphology, or architectural history) applicant meets minimum professional qualifications for archaeology as defined by the Department of the Interior (36CFR 61), or be willing to undergo on-the-job training to meet these qualifications.
· More than three years of full-time professional extensive experience with the Required Qualifications listed above.
· More than three years of extensive experience in Iowa archaeology or the archaeology of adjacent states.
· Demonstrated understanding of geomorphology, including soil type identification, description, and analysis.
· Demonstrated experience with inventory and evaluation of architectural properties.
· Extensive knowledge of Plains or Midwestern prehistoric and historic archaeology.
· Extensive experience with ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro to create maps and gather spatial data.
· Extensive experience with GPS or Total Station data collection devices.
· Basic PowerPoint, Photoshop, and Acrobat experience.
· Demonstrated ability to publish archaeological results in professional journals or books.
Desirable Qualifications
· Professional experiences with public outreach, education, and volunteer coordination.
