Conduct research activities/experiments for clinical research studies in genetics and epigenetics of craniofacial development and abnormalities.  Collect, analyze and summarize data, prepare reports, contribute to manuscripts/publications, provide administrative and project management, and provide facility and equipment management.  For a full job description, please send an e-mail to


  • Assist in the review of existing dental histories and records of patients treated at the College of Dentistry and Hospital Dentistry.
  • Assist in the establishment of protocols for systematic search, review and measurement of existing patient records.
  • Assist in the coordination of research patient appointments and implementation of subject recruitment protocols.
  • Maintain a research database of all subjects and data collected.
  • Carry out routine laboratory bench work associated with standard molecular, biochemical, cellular, and histological based approaches.
  • Maintain detailed records of sample management and experiments performed in the lab.
  • Participate and present in weekly lab meetings

Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations:

  • Assist in the processing of laboratory samples for research projects.
  • Experiment with different imaging acquisition systems in order to obtain the best possible results in data collection.
  • Perform DNA extraction, quantification and quality control
  • Perform molecular and cell biology techniques including, PCR, sequencing, microarrays, cell culture and other experiments relevant to the research project.
  • Prepare, perform and analyze results.
  • Prepare DNA/RNA samples for shipment.


Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications:

  • Execute data collection that will go into reports, grant and manuscript submissions.
  • Edits, assists and participates in grant and research manuscript writing efforts.
  • Prepare data for analysis and assist in research and generating figures or tables to report research data for publication purposes.
  • Use Excel to perform simple descriptive statistics such as calculating mean, standard deviation, standard error, etc., and inferential statistics such as t-test, ANOVA, etc.

Administrative and Project Management:

  • Assist in the maintenance of lab equipment
  • Order supplies and maintain supply cabinet including production of buffers and stock solutions
  • Review existing orthodontic records to identify eligible subjects for the study.
  • Perform internal reviews to ensure that all files related to research are up to date and accurate.
  • Organize regular cleaning schedules of key research areas, including laboratory glassware.
  • Participate in weekend lab checks of freezers, incubators and other key equipment when necessary.

Facilities and Equipment Management:

  • Calibrate imaging and laboratory equipment
  • Assist in the maintenance of lab chemical inventory and safety audit
  • Trouble shooting with equipment required to collect data.


  • Assists in training of students and new staff in the lab.
  • Help supervise student projects.
  • Data entry and data collection.
  • Creation of new project databases.


100% Research Assistant - PRK1 (Specified Term)

College of Dentistry – Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research (Iowa City, IA)

Salary:  $39,208 to commensurate (Pay Grade:  3A)


Schedule:       Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm

                        Occasional weekends.


  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, anatomy and/or physiology, biochemistry, genetics, or equivalent; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Typically requires 6 months lab experience including PCR, or DNA sequencing, or DNA/RNA isolations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience manipulating spreadsheets (i.e. Microsoft Excel or Google).


  • Experience with molecular and cell biology techniques including cell culture, and/or standard cloning/subcloning. Candidates with prior experience of working with cell culture will be prioritized for consideration.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative environment.
