The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Ophthalmology is seeking a 100% Research Assistant (PRK1) To conduct cellular/molecular studies and general animal experimentation in a newly funded vision research laboratory, to set up and operate laboratory equipment and to record and consolidate research data.


·         Perform experiments on mice or rats, including surgical induction of optic nerve degeneration and induction of autoimmune reactions.

·         Perform cell culture of mammalian cells.

·         Perform histochemical and immunohistochemical evaluation, molecular, and protein biochemical analysis of neuronal tissue.

·         Maintain daily records on data and procedures carried out.

·         Prepare materials for reports, manuscripts, and presentations.

·         Assist in maintaining inventory of chemicals and reagents, keeping the premises neat and orderly.

·         Instruct trainees in laboratory procedures and techniques.

·         Duties will require occasional availability after hours or on weekends.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00a-5:00p

Salary: $38,439 – $56,995

Pay Level: 3A

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or in biology, biochemistry, or molecular biology (natural or health science field) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

·         Experience with molecular biology techniques (incl. DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, Western Blot, etc.)

·         Experience with immunohistochemical techniques.

·         Experience with mammalian cell culture methods.


Desirable Qualifications

·         Experience with handling of small animals.

·         Experience with ELISA assays.

·         Experience with immunology methods.
