Research Assistant - Department of Health and Human Physiology

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS), Department of Health and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa has an opening for a full-time Research Assistant. The research assistant will assist in conducting a research project in the molecular and cellular mechanisms of skeletal muscle wasting. Responsibilities include performing standard and moderately complex experiments and research procedures; assisting in the maintenance and requisition of laboratory equipment and supplies; assisting in maintaining the laboratory budget; assisting in maintaining compliance with EHS guidelines; assisting in grant application preparation; record keeping and database management; participating in other research and organizational tasks; and training new lab members, including undergraduate students. This is a two-year specified term position with the possibility of extension.

Key Duties:
• Perform standard and moderately complex research procedures in cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, and genetics.
• Follows specific methodologies for conducting research. This includes ability to be trained to conduct standardized assessments and testing in a reliable fashion and in accordance with standardized procedures.
• Maintain detailed records of results.
• Analyze data using excel and other software.
• Order and organize lab supplies and equipment.
• Work with and train other laboratory personnel or students in research techniques or procedures.

Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, genetics, neuroscience, physiology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience with word processing and spreadsheet programs and the ability to learn new technical skills quickly.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain laboratory stock reagents and supplies.
• Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, strong organizational skills, and accurate record keeping.
• Demonstrated ability to learn new and varied techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe, healthy, and functional working environment in the lab.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Previous laboratory or research experience in the areas of molecular biology/biochemistry/biology/physiology or related field.

Desired Qualifications:
• Demonstrated ability in basic laboratory skills like PCR and Western blotting.
• Ability to supervise undergraduate students.
