Research Assistant - Dermatology

The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine department of Dermatology is seeking a Research Assistant to perform research aimed at understanding the mechanisms of cutaneous autoimmune diseases and determining what role cells in the skin play in the transmission of viral or parasitic infections. In addition, this person will also participate in processing/storage and/or shipping patient samples for clinical trials. In all cases, research activities will be completed with high fidelity to protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator.


General duties include

  • Set-up, maintenance, and operation of laboratory equipment 
  • Log daily activities in an organized notebook
  • Update sample inventories and online patient database (RedCap)
  • Assist with procurement of supplies and materials
  • Collaborate with other laboratories for transfer of experimental samples
  • Conducting experiments in line with goals of collaborators
  • Data recording, consolidation, preparation and presentation to the principal investigator, lab group, or other researchers
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills are critical
  • As individual skills develop additional duties may include: read and review literature, troubleshoot and develop protocols, evaluate and test new procedures, and to provide direction or training to students and newer employees

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in basic science or engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Practical laboratory knowledge of standard techniques, including calculation of molar solutions, measuring liquids, weighing chemicals
  • Practical experience with sterile tissue culture (mammalian or bacterial)
  • Previous experience with Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint and Word
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with animal handling (mice preferred); immunization, euthanasia, tissue collection

Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous laboratory experience with some or all of the following:

    • Experience with handling human tissues, such as blood and skin

    • Experience with purification of cell populations using density gradients, immunomagnetic selection or FACS

    • Experience with embedding and sectioning of tissues, IHC or fluorescent immunostaining and visualization and/or quantitation of staining via microscopy and NIH imageJ (FIJI).
