The laboratory of Dr. Alex Kleinpeter in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Research Assistant to join our dedicated team. The Kleinpeter lab uses molecular biology, virology, and biochemical approaches to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the HIV assembly, maturation, and drug resistance. The research assistant will work closely with Dr. Kleinpeter to maintain normal laboratory operations and assist with various techniques required for the research projects in the laboratory.

 
Duties to include:
  • Perform research related to the above research goals, including:

a.       Cloning and site-directed mutagenesis of retroviral vectors

b.       Tissue culture experiments under standard Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) and BSL-2+ conditions with both infectious and non-infectious HIV.

c.       Biochemical assays using purified viral proteins

  • Ensure the laboratory remains functional and organized, and that research integrity is maintained.
  •  Be involved in the preparation and dissemination of scientific manuscripts and presentations.
  • Aid the group in preparing and adhering to institutional safety and research regulations, including EHS, IBC, and IRB protocols.
  • Clean and sterilize glassware, prepare media, reagents, and other materials using appropriate procedures
  • Manage the ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment.
    • Complete work within specified time guidelines.
    • Regularly discuss progress and any problems encountered.
    • Present research progress at laboratory meetings.
    • Maintain a clean work area.

Much of the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes and programs. Many faculty members are internationally renowned for their research. Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences. 
  
Percent of Time: 100% 
Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological science (e.g., biochemistry, genetics, microbiology).
  • Previous experience in microbiology, cell biology, immunology, or biochemistry laboratory
  • Experience with mammalian tissue culture standard operating procedures and techniques including plasmid transfection.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques including PCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, agarose gel electrophoresis, and western blotting. 
  • Experience in gathering, recording, and analyzing experimental data.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize projects and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications 
  • Experience with the safe handling of pathogenic agents is desired.
  • Experience with protein purification is desired.
