The laboratory of Dr. Li Wu in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is seeking a Research Assistant to join a team focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of HIV replication and latency, virus interaction with host factors, and anti-viral innate immunity.  The position will conduct experimental procedures under the supervision of the PI and a research scientist or a postdoctoral researcher. This position will also be responsible for general laboratory maintenance to facilitate overall laboratory efficiency and productivity.

 

Position Summary: 

  • Conduct experiments under the supervision of senior laboratory staff.
  • Carry out experiments involving cell culture, transfection, infection, RNA quantification and analysis, Western blotting, and other virology and molecular biology techniques as directed.
  • Maintain detailed records of procedures performed and experimental results.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled lab or subgroup meetings to discuss experimental design and results.
  • Maintain supply and reagent inventory.
  • Oversee laboratory organization.
  • Ensure adherence to biological and chemical safety.

Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a Microbiology, Immunology, Cell biology, Biology, Chemistry or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience in a research laboratory environment
  • A minimum of 6 months experience with molecular biology techniques.
  • Ability to follow research methodology and protocols.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Strong problem solving and attentiveness to detail.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with any of the following:
    • Cell culture
    • Virus handling and quantification
    • Western blot
    • Nucleic acid purification
    • RT-qPCR
    • Flow cytometry
    • ELISA
