The University of Iowa College of Public Health Department of Community and Behavioral Health is seeking a Research Associate to conduct and coordinate new research activities in a national study of recovery from alcohol use disorder.  Duties include collecting, analyzing and summarizing data, preparing reports, contributing to manuscripts/publications, administration and supervision/staffing of hourly staff, and ensuring compliance with IRB (ethics board) requirements.  This position will coordinate a range of projects in the research grant, including communication and coordination with subcontractors, including the Public Health Institute – Alcohol Research Group (PHI-ARG) and Ipsos Public Affairs, LLC. 


Duties to include:

•Perform in-depth literature searches, and create charts and graphs from the data to support the article/abstract.

•Develop research and project plans, contacts, materials and other components.

•Provide technical assistance to researchers, students, agencies, and other organizations.

•Advise the PI on evaluation and assessment projects. 

•Act as liaison between the PI and project subcontractors (PHI-ARG and Ipsos Public Affairs, LLC); advisory groups, and consultants.

•Represent programs, projects, and studies at professional meetings, symposia, conferences, workshops, and other events.

•Develop survey questionnaires and other research materials for research projects.

•Design, plan, conduct and supervise qualitative interviews. 

•Follow Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures to ensure all research activities are in accordance with rules and regulations. 

•Initiate and maintain records to ensure compliance with the IRB for assigned projects.

•Develop and maintain effective communication methods with project subcontractors. 

•Edit and assist in writing articles, reports, and brochures for publication and distribution

•Combine the data collection methods and results, explain in full detail the goals and survey methodology and summarize findings per publication requirements.

•Identify and write grant applications for new projects. 

•Prepare assessment results for distribution.

•Administer educational and project services, to include writing curriculums, publications, reports and grants.

•Plan and arrange logistics to conferences, courses and training events.

•Coordinate recruitment, data collection, and data management for assessments. 

•Develop dissemination plans and materials to promote recruitment of subjects. 

•Support research project efforts and provide content expertise in strategic planning. 

•Represent the research at programs, projects, and studies at professional meetings, symposia, conferences, workshops, and other events. 

•Provide technical assistance to stakeholders, students, agencies, and other organizations.

•Assist with developing and maintaining the core research site office.

•Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications


Bachelor’s degree, supplemented by one or more years of progressively responsible experience in the conduct of social science research or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a keen attention to detail.


Ability to travel to regional and national meetings and conferences.  Ability to travel overnight, valid US driving license and the ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standard.


Knowledge of and previous experience with the qualitative interview process. 


Evidence of success in communicating and coordinating across multiple stakeholders.  


Highly Desired Qualifications 


Experience overseeing research initiatives. 


Previous supervisory experience. 


Desirable Qualifications          


Minimum of 1 year of experience working with other professionals and the general public.


Master’s degree in Public Health or equivalent degree. 


Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations.
