Senior Pharmacy Technician, Certified - Ambulatory Care
The University of Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our Ambulatory Care team. This position provides specialized support to the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies. Under general supervision of a pharmacist, coordinates and performs technical activities in the pharmacy. Under general supervision of a technician supervisor, carries out activities associated with training and coordination of Pharmacy Technician and Pharmacy Student Technician responsibilities.
Position Responsibilities:
- Coordinates daily technical functions for assigned work areas.
- Provides supervision to Pharmacy Technicians and Student Pharmacy Technicians.
- Reassigns work areas and duties for Technicians based on workload.
- Provides feedback to supervisor regarding performance of technicians.
- Coordinates procurement of equipment, inventory, labels or other supplies as needed.
- Works on-line performing all required Technician duties.
- Assists with interviewing, orienting, training, scheduling and providing work performance feedback.
- Assists with interviewing applicants.
- Assists the supervisor with coordination of training new staff including documentation of training.
- Conducts training and provides remedial training as needed.
- Assists in preparing work schedules for Pharmacy Technicians and Student Pharmacy Technicians.
- Participates in administering competency assessments, certification and re-certification for performing specific job responsibilities.
- Provides performance feedback for both newly hired and existing staff (technicians, students, pharmacists, residents, and externship students).
- Provides coverage as needed at both onsite and offsite locations.
- Monitors the completion of area audits.
- Monitors performance and maintenance of pharmacy equipment.
- Monitors operation of assigned equipment and automation. Performs minor adjustments on equipment or initiates requests for repair or replacement.
- Assures equipment maintenance is completed and documented.
- Assures that only trained personnel are using equipment in a safe and proper manner.
- Assists with computer and cash register database maintenance.
- Participates in inventory management.
- Coordinates inventory activities for assigned area including cycle counts, monthly inventories and return to stock medication with associated adjudication and void, credit, and rebill requests.
- Participates in activities related to medication recalls.
- Coordinates adjustment of inventory levels to meet current needs.
- Runs reports as requested.
- Participates in cash collection and reconciliation activities.
- Assures that patient or third party pricing and billing errors, issues and complaints are resolved. Acts as an advisor for any questions regarding communication with patient.
- Coordinates the identification and reconciliation of third party rejections.
- Verification of and balancing of cash register tapes with funds received.
- Participates in management activities.
- Provides assistance with project analysis.
- Provides assistance with coordination of new projects.
- Conducts meetings to convey information.
- Maintains files related to pharmacy operations.
- Acts as a positive role model. Communicates with clear, positive verbal and written messages to individuals within the department as well as with patients, the general public and other departments. Fosters teamwork by encouraging and assisting others.
Position includes all responsibilities performed by Certified Pharmacy Technicians in the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies.
Participates in database maintenance with computers, equipment and cash registers.
Assists with other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements:
- Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
- National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
- High school diploma or the equivalent.
- Experience
- Any combination of four years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
- Four years of experience as a pharmacy technician
Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations
- Experience with inventory maintenance activities
- Experience working in team environment
- Experience working in detail-oriented work environment
- Knowledge of windows-based computer programs
- Experience working in environment requiring accuracy
- Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment
- Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level
- Clean room experience with hazardous drug sterile compounding is highly desirable
