The University of Iowa Health Care Clinical Cancer Center Pharmacy is seeking a full-time Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our team. This position provides specialized support to the Clinical Cancer Center Pharmacy. Under general supervision by a pharmacist, coordinates and performs as necessary the technical activities of the pharmacy service area.  Under general supervision of the Technician Supervisor carries out activities associated with training and coordination of technician activities. Assists with directing daily workflow for both technicians and students. 

Position Responsibilities:

Coordinates daily technical functions for assigned work areas.

  • Provides supervision to Pharmacy Technicians and Student Pharmacy Technicians.

  • Reassigns work areas and duties for technicians based on workload.

  • Coordinates procurement of equipment, inventory, labels or other supplies as needed.

  • Works on-line performing all required technician duties as needed.

  • Assists with interviewing, orienting, training, scheduling and providing work performance feedback.

  • Assists with interviewing applicants.

  • Assists the supervisor with coordination of training new staff including documentation of training.

  • Conducts training and provides remedial training as needed.

  • Assists in preparing work schedules for Pharmacy Technicians and Student Pharmacy Technicians.

  • Participates in administering competency assessments.

    • Completes aseptic technique training of new staff assigned to this area.

    • Maintains twice yearly PATT2 and fingertip sampling and yearly hazardous competencies of all staff assigned to area.

  • Provides performance feedback for both newly hired and existing staff (technicians, students, pharmacists, residents, and externship students).

 

Has a working knowledge of USP <797> and <800> and can do the following:

 

  • Safely prepare patient specific sterile products including hazardous medications.

  • Use appropriate PPE & identify/use appropriate preparation supplies (i.e CSTD).

  • Successfully complete/pass aseptic competencies and didactic test.

 

Monitors performance and maintenance of pharmacy equipment.

  •  Monitors operation of assigned equipment and automation. Performs minor adjustments on equipment or initiates requests for repair or replacement.

  • Assures equipment maintenance is completed and documented.

  • Assures that only trained personnel are using equipment in a safe and proper manner.

  • Review daily air pressure readings of cleanrooms.

  • Assists with computer and cash register database maintenance.

 

Participates in inventory management.

  • Coordinates inventory activities for assigned area including cycle counts, monthly inventories and return to stock prescriptions.

  • Assists with reporting & documentation of medication recalls.

  • Coordinates adjustment of inventory levels to meet current needs.

  • Runs reports as requested.

 

Participates in cash collection and reconciliation activities.

  • Assures that patient or third-party pricing and billing errors, issues and complaints are resolved.

  • Acts as an advisor for any questions regarding communication with patient.

  • Coordinates the identification and reconciliation of third-party rejections.

  • Verification of and balancing of cash register tapes with funds received.

Participates in management activities.

  • Provides assistance with project analysis and helps with coordination of new projects.

  • Helps communicate updates/disseminate information to area staff.

  • Maintains files & documents related to pharmacy operations.

  • Acts as a positive role model. Communicates with clear, positive verbal and written messages to individuals within the department as well as with patients, the general-public and other departments. Fosters teamwork by encouraging and assisting others.

Assists with other duties as assigned.

Position includes all responsibilities performed by Certified Pharmacy Technicians in the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies.

                                                                          Hours: 8-hour shifts between 0530-1800 (Monday-Friday).

 

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  2. National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
  3. High school diploma or the equivalent.
  4. Any combination of four years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences or four years of experience as a pharmacy technician.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations

  • Experience with inventory maintenance activities

  • Experience working in team environment

  • Experience working in detail-oriented work environment

  • Knowledge of Windows-based computer programs

  • Experience working in environment requiring high level of accuracy

  • Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment

  • One year cleanroom experience with hazardous drug sterile compounding is highly desirable
