Position Summary:  

Assess patients’ nursing care needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided, and integrate nursing theory and research into clinical practice. Provide leadership to members of the nursing team in order to maintain patient care standards

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with team members in assisting Anesthesiologist with General, Regional, Peripheral nerve blocks and/or Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC)
  • Initiating IV access for surgical patients, preoperatively, intraoperatively, and post operatively as needed.
  • Assisting with administration of blood products intraoperatively, as well as intraoperative lab draws.
  • Responsible for on-call duties, assigned on a rotating basis. This coverage includes Anesthesia cases in the CV lab, L&D, Radiology, Endoscopy, and MCD OR.
  • Assist with difficult IV starts throughout the facility as needed.
  • Adhere to departmental standards and practice guidelines.
  • Apply nursing theory to assess, diagnose, treat and evaluate patient responses.
  • Integrate information from patient and family into multidisciplinary patient care plans and evaluate responses.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for patients and follow universal precautions.
  • Implement emergency care procedures when necessary.
  • Maintain skills/competency related to special equipment, medications and procedures.
  • Responsible and accountable for the provision of care for patients.
  • Evaluate the quality of nursing care provided by other staff members.
  • Participate as a member of the health care team utilizing effective communication skills.
  • Participate in the development of unit, department and hospital policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Review staffing issues and recommend cost containment strategies.
  • Serve as a member of various University committees, as directed.
  • Participate in ongoing strategic planning process.
  • Assist with OR room cleaning and turnover.
  • Perform other projects or tasks as assigned.
  • Evaluate and document effectiveness of patient/family teaching.
  • Participate in the orientation of new nursing staff and the ongoing education and training.
  • Participate in research utilization activities and integrate findings into practice.
  • Apply quality improvement principles to improve patient outcomes.
  • Responsible for variance tracking of critical paths and implementing corrective action.
  • Maintain patient rights and confidentiality and serve as a patient advocate.
  • Responsible for adherence to legal, professional and institutional requirements.
  • Responsible for maintenance and enhancement of clinical skills.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.

Percent of Time: 90 - 100%
Schedule: Days (0700-1530); weekends/holidays/call is assigned on a rotating basis

Salary: $61,183 minimum at 100% effort to commensurate *This does not include differentials.  Salary will vary based on years of experience and percent of effort.*

Education Required:

  • An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required

Experience Required:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions
  • General computer skills are required
  • A minimum of one year RN telemetry experience or one year of RN post-surgical step-down experience is required
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree in Nursing is highly desired
  • If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures
