Supervisor, Custodian Services
The University of Iowa department of Facilities Management is seeking a Supervisor, Custodian Services to provide general supervision, coordinate, supervise, inspects results, and be responsible for the work activities of custodians in accordance with established guidelines in the Second Shift Service Area. This position is scheduled to work Monday to Friday, 4:30pm – 1:30am, overtime required.
Duties to include:
- Understand all employee work assignments and schedule for adequate coverage.
- Complete 4 hours of administrative time and 4 hours of cleaning time per day. When necessary, complete additional custodial work assignments.
- Interview, select, train and evaluate staff. Provide coaching and direction. Take actions related to promotions and discipline as appropriate. Assist with the training of new employees and retraining as necessary.
- Promote a safe work environment and maintain safety standards to assure compliance with federal, state, local and University Regulations.
- Assists in planning procedures and work methods and revises or recommends revisions to improve efficiency of operations and services.
About Facilities Management:
Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards of our beautiful Iowa City campus. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design & construction, maintain & clean the buildings & grounds, and provide utilities management.
The University is located along the picturesque Iowa River in Iowa City, a city of some 77,000 people (170,000+ in the metro area) regularly ranked as one of the nation’s best places to live. Iowa City is less than four hours from Chicago and within five hours of Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Kansas City, readily accessible via interstate highways and a regional airport 30 minutes away.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
- Two years of custodial experience or related building and facilities maintenance, including supervisory experience for a minimum of six months; supervision to include assigning daily work activities, inspecting and monitoring quality or work, and scheduling and coordinating work activities.
Special Qualifications:
- Valid Driver’s license is required and ability to meet and maintain University Driving Policy Standards
Desirable Qualifications:
- Ability to read, write, and follow directions.
- Basic to intermediate computer skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), preferably AiM
- Knowledge of custodial equipment and supplies.
- Experience in customer service and working with the public.
- Experience working in an institutional or corporate setting.
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
