Supply Chain Associate
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is seeking a 50%- time Supply Chain Associate for the Biochemistry Stores. This employee will assist with day-to-day store operations by helping customers with orders and participating in the management of all aspects of inventory control.
Biochemistry Stores provides an essential service to University of Iowa researchers, faculty, staff, and community with the goods we sell. We strive to provide exceptional customer service and a positive work environment with our passion, our teamwork, and our inventory management skills.
Position Responsibilities
Procure and deliver goods and services: Receive, store, and deliver goods and services.
- Provide a safe and effective storefront by maintaining a clean and organized storage space.
- Support the entire life cycle of inventoried goods which can include receiving and storing goods.
- Provide back up for others during absences, which may mean extra hours beyond 20.
Inventory Management and Marketing: Receive, properly store and distribute product. Address inventory issues related to the supply chain and suggested models for improvement. Maintain and secure inventory and report issues as needed. Responsible for implementation of marketing strategy or plan.
- Maintain FIFO management principles.
- Improve inventory accuracy by making changes to put away locations and optimizing space.
- Assist with addressing inventory discrepancy.
- May aid with periodic inventory counts and reconciliation.
Vendor and Customer Relations: Interact with internal and external customers, answer questions about orders and shipments. Reconcile discrepancies and address customer concerns.
- Provide excellent customer service by filling customer orders and answering questions related to the inventory items.
- Resolve customer concerns/problems.
- Be a liaison between our customers and Stores procurer providing feedback on the quality and cost of goods.
- Implement procedures/improvements to better the customer experience.
Data Management or Data Systems Development: Maintain inventory/equipment database(s).
- Support data management by communicating errors in the inventory management system.
- Review and recommend improvements to our KPI’s utilizing the Campus Data Dashboard.
Fiscal Responsibility: Assist with managing the budget within defined parameters.
- Assist with management of the monthly billing of dry ice and liquid nitrogen.
- Will serve a role in the cash handling process (credit card sales).
- Other duties as assigned.
Leadership/Supervision: May provide functional and/or administrative supervision of student staff.
- May provide functional supervision of student employees by training, assigning work, and providing feedback on performance.

Education Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree with coursework in business, marketing, natural or physical sciences, or the equivalent combination of related education and experience.
Experience Requirements
- Demonstrated experience with computerized inventory management systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated strong attention to detail and organizational skills within a team-based organization.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with people of all backgrounds and perspectives.
- Dedicated to providing exceptional customer service.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Ability to move on foot throughout the store. Ability to move/lift 30 lbs. regularly and 60 lbs. occasionally.
Desired Qualifications
- Reasonable (6 months to 1 year) customer service experience.
- Reasonable (6 months to 1 year) scientific storeroom experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency with the University of Iowa PeopleSoft inventory system.
- Reasonable (6 months - 1 year) functional supervisory experience
- Experience with hazardous material storage, management, and spill clean-up.
