Translation Program Assistant - Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Iowa has an opening for a part-time Translation Program Assistant.  The Translation Program Assistant coordinates and performs overall administrative support for the Translation program, housed within the Division of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Reporting to the Administrator, this position will directly support the needs of the undergraduate and graduate programs in translation (the MFA in Literary Translation, Minor in Translation for Global Literacy; and forthcoming BA in Translation). This position is part time (50%) and the schedule of work is created in consultation with the Administrator. This is a two-year specified term position with the possibility of extension.




Key Duties Include:

  • Administratively supports the needs of the undergraduate and graduate programs in translation (the MFA in Literary Translation, Minor in Translation for Global Literacy; and forthcoming BA in Translation) by actively managing the following initiatives: 
  • Curriculum Development
  • Translator in Residency Programs
  • Convocation Series
  • DWLLC Symposium
  • Library of Computer Assisted Technology (CAT) Software
    • (in collaboration with the CLCL)
  • Establish and manage communication systems for the translation programs, including email accounts and scheduling needs.
  • Coordinates project components and provides logistic support, travel arrangements, event planning and scheduling, communication, and outreach.
  • Work with USS and Administrator on purchasing needs for the Translation program.
  • Manage and execute processes for student communication, prospective student inquiries for the undergraduate translation program(s).
  • Collaborate with CLCL on computer assisted technology needs for the translation program. Create resource information and build communication on connecting to services provided within the CLCL.
  • Create and manage social media content for programs, with advisement from Director of the MFALT and undergraduate translation programs.




Education Required: A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 6 months of office administrative experience and the demonstrated ability to carry out ongoing office administration tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Working knowledge and application of oral and written communication and relationship building skills.
  • Working proficiency in Microsoft Office computer programs.
  • Must demonstrate careful attention to detail and accuracy, strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks quickly and effectively.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in and/or appreciation for the studies of translation, international studies, and/or world languages, literatures, and cultures.
  • Working proficiency with social media and the ability to develop fliers and brochures.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate and work effectively with diverse individuals in a diverse environment in a constructive and collaborative manner.
