The University of Iowa, Landscape Services is seeking a highly motivated person to work as a Tree Trimmer. This position is a member of the Tree Crew.  Under general supervision, performs routine duties in the maintenance, care and treatment of trees and shrubs.  Work requires a general knowledge of tree maintenance and utilization of bucket trucks and work from ladders.  Position operates and maintains all equipment and tools associated with tree care and removal. Must have basic knowledge of ANSI standards including proper pruning technique and basic tree maintenance skills, tree and shrub knowledge, equipment, hand tools. During inclement winter weather this position will be required to assist in snow and ice removal in a variety of equipment that may include skid steers, plow trucks, sander, or Polar Trac. 

Duties to Include:

  • Responsible for tree and shrub pruning, maintenance, planting and removal
  • Perform snow removal using designated equipment, such as utility vehicle with sander, shovel, and snowblower
  • Assist other Landscape Services units as needed such as the Turf Crew, by operating utility vehicle, mowers, skid loaders, JCB, tractors, etc. and attachments
  • Use technology as required in fulfilment of position (e.g., email, Employee Self Service, work order system)
  • Perform minor repairs and service work on equipment
  • Communicate with supervisor, staff, and customers.
  • Driving to work locations
  • Other duties as assigned

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm; Due to the critical operational needs of the department, this position may be required to work overtime.

During inclement weather, required to answer phone as early as 2:30 am, and return to campus as early as 4 am for

snow/ice removal

About Facilities Management:

Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards for our downtown Iowa City campus and Oakdale campus in Coralville. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design and construction, and maintain and clean the buildings and grounds.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Two years’ experience in tree maintenance or related work or any combination of related experience and education from which comparable knowledge and ability can be acquired which totals two years.
  • May be required to obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

 

Special Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.
  • Must have successfully completed commercial certification tests (30T-Ornamental and Turf) for application of pesticides and be eligible to be certified within 6 months of hire.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Three years or more previous landscape, groundskeeping or tree care experience
  • Possession of valid Class A or B CDL with air brakes
  • Snow removal experience using snowplows and skid loaders
  • Good communication skills and experience working on a team
  • Basic computer experience
  • Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting experience
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives
