UI REACH (Realizing Educational and Career Hopes) is seeking candidate for the position of Student Support Specialist. The person in this position will provide student support to UI REACH students by developing strategic interventions to encourage student success, provide operational support as part of the student support team and assist with developing and implementing short and long term strategic planning goals.  

 

UI REACH is a comprehensive transition program for students ages 18 – 25 years old with intellectual, cognitive and learning disabilities. UI REACH offers an integrated college experience in a caring and structured environment.  UI REACH Is a program within the College of Education.

 

This is a full time, 12- month specified term position which may be eligible for renewal.

 

Location: on site in Iowa City, Iowa

 

The individual in this position will work a flexible schedule as needed that could include evenings and weekends based on student needs.

 

Key Areas of Responsibilities and Specific Job Tasks:

 

Non Clinical Programs and Development, Presentation, and Evaluation

  • Assess and monitor student support mechanisms and networks for relevance and effectiveness.
  • Provide reports and recommendations regarding performance of students.
  • Assess and ensure student support alignment with strategic goals of the program.
  • Ensures a student-centered approach in delivering individual and group supports and instruction.
  • Manages an active caseload of students.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of student support operations
  • Remains current on best practices in the field for supporting persons with disabilities in college environments.
  • Works with students, families and staff to establish interventions as needed.
  • Serves in the staff on call rotation as assigned.

 

Training Education

  • Work with student support coordinator and academic coordiator to review and implement curriculum for student health and wellbeing.
  • Supports advisor team in caseload management and advising practices.
  • Assists with professional development for staff.

 

Consultation Services

  • Utilizes a strengths-based approach to providing supports to and developing rapport with students
  • Assists students in developing increased independence in the areas of conflict resolution, problem solving, social appropriateness, and responding to emergencies.
  • Continues development of relationships with families, University of Iowa campus partners, local support agencies, funding agencies and other entities that could provide supports to students.
  • Serve on external councils and working committees that are aligned with UI REACH’s purpose.

Education Requirement: BSW, Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education or relevant degree or the equivalent combination of relevant work and education experience.  MSW preferred

 

Required Qualifications:

•    Demonstrated experience (typically 1 year or greater) working with students with special needs and/or learning disabilities in secondary or post-secondary education environments.

•    Experience in connecting persons with disabilities with supports that foster success in the community.

•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

•    Knowledge and application of communication skill and relationship building that demonstrate the ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.

•    Case management experience with students with disabilities.

Desired Qualifications:

•    Master Social Work licensing preferred
