The University of Iowa Pentacrest Museum is hiring a dedicated Visitor Services Coordinator (50% appointment). Pentacrest Museums is please to bring aboard a new Visitor Services Coordinator. If you have experience with scheduling, training, supervision of professionals and/or student staff, and have developing knowledge of public programming and visitor services operations at museums, this may be your next career move.


As a part-time Visitor Services Coordinator, you will hire, train, manage, and supervise student workers and volunteers in museum processes and procedures at the Pentacrest Museums and other spaces deemed appropriate. As the Visitor Services Coordinator, you are the primary supervisor of event staffs and docents. You will also have the opportunity to:

  • Schedule tours and programs, as well as monitor gallery spaces for necessary maintenance.
  • Respond to public inquiries. Respond to special requests and issues from patrons with special needs.
  • Hire, train, manage, and supervise student workers and volunteers.
  • May serve on relevant committees, attend meetings (internal and external), and attend career building training and conferences, to build relationships with partner organizations.
  • Document organizational protocols, standards, and procedures for contracts management and administration.

About the Department: The University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums (UIPM) are the Museum of Natural History and the Old Capitol Museum. The UIPM serves to strengthen the vital role of both museums in the educational, research, and engagement missions of the University.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Education, Museum Studies or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage scheduling, training, and supervision of professional and student staff
  • Professional experience working directly with the public.
  • Professional experience supervising personnel.
  • Must have a valid U.S. driving license and be able to meet the University of Iowa’s Fleet Safety requirements.

Competencies Required:

  • Demonstrates a working proficiency level in the following competencies:
    • Proficiency with computer software applications.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Museum Studies course work or certificate.
  • 2 or more years working directly with the public.
  • Experience with museum visitor services operations.
  • Experience managing museum docent staff.
  • Some knowledge of developing museum public programming.
  • Some knowledge of University policies, procedures, and regulations.

Work Modality:  This position is primarily on-campus but may be eligible for some ad hoc remote work in alignment with dept policies and practices. All remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location. This position will work Tuesday to Saturday with occasional evenings and weekends required. This position will be 50% time.

Compensation: $19,000 – $ 20,400 with Competitive Benefits
