The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is seeking an 50-60% Clerk III (GB12) for Ocular Pathology. Under the general supervision of the clinical faculty physician and Administrative Services Coordinator overseeing the Ocular Pathology Lab for the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, the Clerk III performs clerical work and patient related activities to support physician clinical/laboratory. Duties may involve the use of personal computer, computer terminals, and a variety of software and/or conventional office equipment. Key duties include:

  • Performs daily work in the Ocular Pathology lab including but not limited to:

o   Logging in of specimens received from outside UI Health Care

o   Slide labeling, filing, pulling and maintenance of specimen slide/report files.

o   Assists with picking up and accessioning of specimens.

o   Interfaces with staff and referring physicians concerning patient and specimen information.

o   Provides back up telephone coverage and reception for the laboratory.

o   Assists with path report data entry, proofreading, faxing, routing, filing, and scanning.

o   Assists with manual revisions.

o   Assists with return of outside slides/blocks.

o   Assists with sending out slides/blocks for outside requests.

  • ·         Patient related activities that support physician.

o   Phone messaging

o   Assists with patient letter printing, proofreading, faxing, mailing.

o   Assists with contacting new patients and/or referring physicians for records as needed for appointments.

o   Assists with calling new patients to remind them of their appt the Friday before clinic.

  • ·         Follows university, hospital, and department policies and procedures.

o   Respects the confidentiality of patients and visitors.

o   Respects staff confidentiality.

o   Assists coworkers as needed.

o   Notifies supervisor if ill or delayed, and calls in at beginning of scheduled shift for each day absent.

o   Requests future absences in accordance with collective bargaining agreement and department policy.

o   Interacts with other employees and the public in a positive manner.

o   Performs projects within the agreed upon time unless an extension is requested and approved.

 

Percent of Time: 50-60%

Schedule: Preferred schedule Monday – Friday, Noon or 12:30 – 4:30p up to 24 hours per week. Schedule may be modified to fit candidate and laboratory needs.

Tentative Start Date: Summer 2025

Location: UI Health Care – Ocular Pathology Lab (Iowa City, IA)

On Campus: This position is performed fully on campus.

Salary: $19,157.40 - Commensurate

Pay Grade: 08

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • Any combination of related clerical office experience, related undergraduate education and/or post high school clerical training that is the equivalent to two years of full-time employment. 

Desirable Qualifications

  • ·         Knowledge of institutional and unit policies.
  • ·         Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization
  • ·         Skill in operating office equipment
  • ·         Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and the public.
  • ·         Ability to make decisions requiring interpretation and judgement.
  • ·         Ability to gather, analyze and display data in appropriate format and keep accurate records.
  • ·         Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • ·         Previous experience in a healthcare environment.
  • ·         Previous experience with EPIC software
  • ·         Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment.
