UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking an 80-100% Nurse Clinician to support our General Cardiology Program.
The Nurse Clinician within the General Cardiology Program plays a pivotal role in providing comprehensive care and support to patients facing complex cardiac conditions. This role combines clinical expertise, patient education, and coordination of care to optimize patient outcomes and enhance their quality of life. The Nurse Clinician collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, and other healthcare professionals, to develop and implement individualized care plans tailored to each patient's unique needs. Responsibilities include conducting thorough patient assessments, managing symptoms, administering treatments, and offering guidance on medication management and lifestyle modifications. Additionally, the Nurse Clinician serves as a primary point of contact for patients and their families, offering emotional support, education, and resources throughout the continuum of care. Through their dedication and compassion, Nurse Clinicians within the General Cardiology Program play a vital role in improving patient outcomes and fostering a culture of excellence in cardiac care.

Being a Nurse in the Heart and Vascular Center
Position Responsibilities
- Collaborate with nursing, medical staff and other health professionals in the development and review of standards and in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care for the patient population with regard to the condition and age of the patient. Provide direct nursing care when necessary.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, tailored to each patient’s specific needs and goals.
- Administer medications, including intravenous therapies, and provide patient education on medication management, potential side effects, and adherence.
- Oversee patient flow through the UIHC continuum of care on both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Facilitates care of patient(s) requiring admission, coordinating necessary admission procedures, pre and post procedure care.
- Provide patient education in the HVC that includes:
- Assessing learning needs of patients and family’s post-op procedures and provides appropriate education related to diagnosis, procedure performed, risk factor modification, and treatment regimens.
- Facilitating learning and provides consultation to those in external agencies, communities and to other health care professionals.
- Supporting implementation and evaluation of staff education and orientation programs, coordinating and presenting.
- Facilitating the educational experience for health care students and monitors the care delivered.
- Assessing learning needs of patients and family’s post-op procedures and provides appropriate education related to diagnosis, procedure performed, risk factor modification, and treatment regimens.
- Independently coordinate and facilitate patient care between multiple disciplines within both the confines of UIHC and the community (including home health agencies, referring physicians and other community support services). Facilitate continuity of care.
- Perform telephone triage of patient calls and facilitates medication refills as needed.
- Provide cross-coverage to other HVC Nurse Clinicians PRN.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, case conferences, and team meetings to discuss patient progress, treatment plans, and care coordination efforts.
- Document patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately and comprehensively in electronic medical records, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and organizational policies.
- Stay updated on advances in general cardiology management, evidence-based practices, and clinical guidelines to enhance knowledge and skills in cardiac care delivery.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and research projects within the General Cardiology Program and the Heat and Vascular Center to enhance patient care delivery outcomes.
- Serve as a resource and mentor to nursing staff, providing guidance and support in managing complex cardiac cases and fostering a culture of excellence in cardiac care delivery.
- Provide input into financial management activities including operational budgetary decisions and cost containment.
- Participate in the ongoing implementation of current regulatory standards required to meet state and national agency accreditation.
- Assist with the designated quality database, including compiling and entering quality data.
- Use relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems related to a specific patient population.
- Interact with staff, patients, medical staff, peers, and others in a professional and cooperative manner.
- Adhere to professional and legal standards of nursing practice.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff information.

Education Requirement
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.
Experience Requirement
- Minimum 6 months providing direct nursing care or management/supervision of cardiovascular medical/surgical patients OR Minimum 1 year providing direct nursing care/ care coordination within an outpatient setting required.
- Demonstrated ability to professionally interact with patients/families, nursing staff and other multi-disciplinary team members required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
- Demonstrated knowledge and clinical expertise in specific clinical area of practice required.
Certification/Licensure Requirement•
- Current certification in BLS required by start date.
- Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa required by start date.
- Current job-related professional certification desired.
Desired Qualifications
- 3 years providing direct nursing care or management/supervision of cardiovascular medical/surgical patient population.
- Experience managing the care coordination of patients in an outpatient setting and/or within cardiothoracic surgery desired.
- Experience in an academic medical setting desired.
- Previous experience using EPIC desired.
