The Department of Dance is seeking a full-time Administrative Specialist and Assistant to the Chair.

The Administrative Specialist performs administrative, academic, and supervisory support in the Department of Dance requiring a high degree of discretion and independent judgment and is responsible for maintaining a strong, team-focused environment to enable Dance to fulfill its research, teaching, and service missions. This position serves as Assistant to the Chair in the Department of Dance and primary supervisor of departmental student workers, musical staff, and University of Iowa Youth Ballet and Community Dance School (UIYB) director(s). This position also manages scheduling and facilities in dance department building and serves as graduate coordinator for the Dance MFA program.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make decisions and exercise a high level of autonomy while performing administrative support/management responsibilities for DEO of Department of Dance, including managing schedules, correspondence, faculty promotion and review processes, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Serve as manager of the main office, building coordinator of Dance department building, point of contact for course management, and graduate coordinator for MFA program.
  • Provide administrative supervision of musical, UIYB, and student employees. Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and performance reviews to assure outcomes are achieved.
  • Provide strategic assistance and implementation of Department of Dance goals under the direction
    of DEO and Performing Arts Administrator.

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and administrative work experience is required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of higher education office administration or related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of, and ability to utilize, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, Forms, etc.) and data collection mechanisms (i.e., surveys, Qualtrics, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience leading, motivating, evaluating, and rewarding personnel, including experience supervising administrative staff.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication; demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and build strong professional working relationships.
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of university policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Experience working with university systems (i.e., MAUI, workflow, HR transactions, etc.).
  • Knowledge of and/or interest in dance and the performing arts.
