Admissions Counselor - College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking an Admissions Counselor to serve as the primary liaison to prospective and admitted undergraduate students looking to enroll in academic programs within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), with a focus on two academic groups within the college.
Duties include partnering with the Office of Admissions, CLAS Undergraduate Programs (CLAS UP), the CLAS Dean’s Office, CLAS academic departments, and campus partners that support student success. With some official duties helping the Office of Admissions team, the CLAS Admissions Counselor will plan, facilitate, and assist with scheduled recruiting events, coordinate connections between campus visitors and academic programs, and support additional on-campus recruiting events and visits with CLAS departments. In collaboration with a team, the CLAS Admissions Counselor will also provide feedback that informs recruitment strategy for prospective students and assist with department specific communication plans related to Enrollment Management.
CLAS considers hybrid work within Iowa and flexible work arrangements for some positions. Options will be discussed during the hiring process. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
Key Responsibilities
- Build awareness of the value of a liberal arts education, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) at the University of Iowa.
- Dedicate 30% of effort to assisting with Office of Admissions programming, outreach, customer support, and events.
- Collaborate with the Office of Admissions to promote and feature CLAS departments through coordinated recruitment outreach (recruitment plans might include but are not limited to on/off campus programs for prospective students, programs for targeted populations, programs that use departmental volunteers/student employees in the recruitment process).
- Coordinate recruitment (outreach) activities with campus and external partners. Programming on some weekends or evenings may be required. Some travel will be required.
- In collaboration with the Office of Admissions, assess CLAS recruiting activities, communication plans, and publications.
- Collaborate with staff in CLAS on scholarship competitions for new students.
- Function as an admission counselor during peak periods providing information sessions, phone or in-person greeting support, and campus programming assistance.

Education Required
- A Bachelor’s degree is required.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year administrative or program experience, which can include part-time student employment or internships.
- Extensive familiarity with university undergraduate academic policies and practices.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Working knowledge of social media production and use (e.g., Instagram).
- Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, as demonstrated at an extensive proficiency level.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to perform a wide variety of tasks while maintaining a professional demeanor, as demonstrated at an extensive proficiency level.
- Proven record of the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Valid driver’s license by start of employment and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.
Desired Qualifications
- Working knowledge of University of Iowa policies and procedures.
- Experience working in an academic setting (e.g., academic advising, career services advising) or working with first-year college students.
- Understanding of federal financial aid practices and policies.
