BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Provide direct patient care within the Division of Infectious Diseases, delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services under physician supervision. As part of the Physician collaboration, ARNPs will exercise autonomy in medical decision-making and patient care. This role may also include mentoring and educating healthcare students, residents, and fellows during their rotations within the division. Additionally, advanced practice providers (APPs) may support research initiatives as appropriate. The primary focus of this position is to support both outpatient and inpatient Infectious Disease services at the Downtown Medical Campus and University Medical Campus. This position will spend approximately 75% time at the Jefferson Street location and 25% time at Main Campus. 

CHARACTERISTIS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide care responsibilities as directed by a supervising physician for outpatient and inpatient Infectious Diseases patients. This will include a combination of the following activities:

  • Obtain medical history, perform physical examination, and document accurately.
  • Evaluate and recommend the management of inpatients with medical or surgical problems and document an assessment and plan.  Most of ID consultants’ recommendations for testing and treatment are ordered by the team who requested the consult.  Communication of recommendations occurs in the Epic note, but timely recommendations should also be communicated directly to team members.
  • Be familiar with best practices for management of common infectious disease syndromes.
  • Order, coordinate, and interpret the performance of laboratory and other diagnostic studies as part of evaluation and management (E&M) activities for outpatients. Obtain pertinent outside laboratory reports as needed.
  • Provide independent and collaborative E&M of health care problems and disease prevention for outpatient infectious disease patients including provision of care in the Travel Medicine Clinic. Direct supervision is available as needed.
  • Support quality patient care through orientation and other staff programs and participate in division CME activities as the schedule allows.
  • Assist in delivery of services to patients requiring longitudinal care including follow up of labs.
  • Refer patients to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated by the patients’ medical needs.
  • Evaluate, treat, and institute procedures to provide an appropriate response to emergency medical problems.
  • Work with other providers and staff to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients and manage transitions of care.
  • Seek input from ID faculty as need for patient scenarios that are complex, including direct supervision when indicated.
  • Admit patients to hospital as indicated.
  • Submit accurately coded charges for provider services in a timely fashion.
  • Order medications for clinic patients. Most medications for inpatients are ordered by the referring provider.
  • Direct other medical personnel and health professionals collaboratively in the execution of patient care.
  • Complete hospital compliances on-time and adhere to best practices to maintain patient confidentiality. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Supervision is received from the Infectious Diseases Division Director, Clinical Director, and/or APP Lead.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Required:

  • A Master’s degree is required.  A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred.  If a Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
  • Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and establish rapport with patients and their family is required.

Desirable:

  • Recent (within 3-5 years) clinical rotations and/or work experience in infectious diseases is desirable. This includes recent experience providing medical care for patient with various infectious diseases.
