Position Summary:

The role of the Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life is to provide leadership and support to the fraternity and sorority community through advising, coordinating, and evaluating fraternity and sorority programs and resources at the University of Iowa. This position will oversee the council leadership advising framework and training, community growth initiatives, and council advisement of the programs, operations, and finances. The Assistant Director reports to the Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life.

Specific Job Duties & Tasks:

  • Serve as the primary advisor to one or more of the four governing councils – Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and/or Panhellenic Council.
  • Serve as the primary chapter coach for a portfolio of chapters from each of the four governing councils – Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Council.
  • Communicate, interpret, and enforce appropriate university policies.
  • Manage and update Fraternity and Sorority Life policies and procedures.
  • Support the facilitation and operations of the Fraternity and Sorority Life strategic planning process.
  • Implement assessment and tracking tools outlined in the Fraternity and Sorority Life annual assessment plan and analyze assessment data to enhance student learning and achievement.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation and facilitation of the council advising framework for all four governing councils.
  • Facilitate annual calendar planning with each governing council, in collaboration with the primary council advisor(s).
  • Regularly communicate and develop relationships with fraternity and sorority inter/national and regional officers and volunteers, chapter advisors and corporation board officers, house directors, and parents/guardians.
  • Oversee and develop the Fraternity and Sorority Life community growth strategy and coordinate chapter (re)establishment efforts.
  • Directly supervise the Coordinator(s) for Fraternity and Sorority Life, as determined by the Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life.
  • Indirectly supervise graduate assistants, practicum students and/or hourly student employees. Assist fraternity and sorority student leaders in developing sound fiscal practices involving university funds and funds collected from constituent dues.
  • May authorize student organization expenditures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Work experience (typically 3 years) in higher education in advising, developing, coordinating, and evaluating student life programs; preferably in Fraternity and Sorority Life.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors, North American Interfraternity Conference, National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, National APIA Panhellenic Association, National Pan-Hellenic Council, National Panhellenic Conference, and other umbrella fraternal organizations.
  • Extensive understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and proficiency in use of Microsoft Office software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Work requires a willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Experience with creating a welcoming and respectful work environment as well as experience working with students of color, international students, other historically underrepresented students, and/or students with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Extensive experience in event planning/programming and activities; ability to plan, organize, fiscally manage, and execute large student life or other medium to large- scale events and to coordinate resources before, during and after an event.

Highly Desirable Qualification:

  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration,  Student Development, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Work experience (typically 1-3 years) in staff supervision.  
  • Affiliation with an inter/national fraternal organization.
  • Working experience in negotiation of contractual agreements in the areas of university, cultural, educational, and entertainment programming.
  • Knowledge of assessment methods and activities; ability to assess programs and review students' learning outcomes to ensure achievement of objectives and strategies.
  • Ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, policies and practices for planning and administering a budget and managing expenses.
