Associate Bedrock Geologist, Iowa Geological Survey
The Associate Bedrock Geologist will contribute to the mission of the Iowa Geological Survey (IGS) within IIHR – Hydroscience and Engineering by actively engaging in ongoing (and future) projects focused on the bedrock stratigraphy and mineral resources of Iowa. As an Associate Geologist with the IGS, the selected applicant will collaborate with bedrock geologists to assist with mapping activities as well as data collection, management, and interpretation. Additional project responsibilities will be determined by funding sources and this person will also collaborate on other IGS projects as required.

Specific Job Duties and Tasks
- Responsible for bedrock mapping in areas determined by the IGS’ State Mapping Advisory Committee. Responsible for fieldwork, data review, map production, and all associated deliverables including cross-sections, stratigraphic charts, and summary reports for a project area. Assist other IGS staff with their mapping projects.
- Assist with the collection and analysis of rock samples from core and outcrop in support of ongoing and future projects. Collaborate with geologists from other State Surveys and the USGS as well as being responsible for the collection, compilation, and management of data the IGS contributes to various initiatives.
- Work closely with principal investigator(s) (PI) and assist with report writing, data compilation, project coordination, and community outreach.
- Collect rock samples from core and cuttings housed at the IGS Rock Library for petrologic, elemental, biostratigraphic, and chemostratigraphic analyses. These activities may include using a rock saw, core splitter, hammer and chisel, mortar and pestle, and power drill and other tools as needed.
- Fieldwork, which typically includes visiting active and abandoned rock quarries, working along roadways, and traversing forests, fields, and waterways, to study and sample bedrock exposures.
- Interpret drilling and down-hole geophysical data regarding rock properties and aquifer characteristics.
- Assist IGS staff with existing research needs, this may include the development of proposals, the interpretation of data, and the preparation of reports.
- Collaborate with faculty and students at the University of Iowa School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability (SEES), as well as other research institutions, to advance the understanding of the bedrock geology and stratigraphy of Iowa.
- Present research progress and results during project and/or IGS meetings and may present at regional and national conferences.
- Assist IGS staff in delineating the protocol for, as well as the planning and execution of, the requisite data collection for various projects.
- Ensure that project goals and timelines are being met and actively communicating progress and challenges with collaborating staff.
- Responsible for successfully completing yearly training courses regarding safety, workplace conduct, and compliance.
- Coordinate and manage equipment and facilities as needed to complete project tasks. Monitor environmental risks, quality control and take action as necessary. Follow protocol related to equipment, tool, and facilities use. The IGS is housed within Trowbridge Hall (TH) on the main campus of the University of Iowa (Iowa City, Iowa), which is also the home of the SEES. The IGS’ Rock Library, located on the UI’s Oakdale Research Campus (Coralville, Iowa), is a warehouse that serves as the repository for all of the IGS’ geologic samples (driller’s logs, cores, chips, and samples from exposures throughout the state).

Education Requirement
- Master’s degree in geology or a closely related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Qualifications
- Foundational understanding of bedrock geology and stratigraphic principles, an aptitude for describing geologic samples, and the ability to interpret geologic map products.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others in a research environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate scientific information to a variety of audiences.
- Familiarity with general geologic and hydrogeologic field methodology and terminology.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of software.
- Ability to travel throughout Iowa and the surrounding region, including overnight stays and driving in inclement weather. A valid driver’s license is required, as is continued compliance with the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standards (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V, Chapter 19).
- Ability to handle the physical aspects of conducting fieldwork, including but not limited to: working in hot, cold, or wet weather, walking/hiking long distances (potentially in rough terrain), and lifting/carrying awkward and/or heavy items.
Desired Qualifications
- Work experience or coursework with a geologic mapping focus and/or ESRI ArcGIS software.
- Work experience at a geological agency (state or federal level).
- Experience working on projects funded by federal agencies such as the USGS and DOE.
- Work experience in geologic carbon sequestration such as modeling, permitting, CO2 mineralization, and DOE reporting.
- Familiarity with geologic hydrogen exploration/generation.
- Proficiency with Adobe programs (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).
