**Information Technology Services intends to hire either an A/V Engineer/Technician (IT Support Consultant; PIC2) or a A/V Engineer/Control Systems Programmer (Senior IT Support Consultant; PIC3) based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. ** 

The Office of Teaching, Learning & Technology, part of IT Services at the University of Iowa, is seeking to hire either an Audiovisual (A/V) Engineer/Technician or an A/V Engineer/Control Systems Programmer to support service management and day-to-day configuration of technology in campus learning spaces. 

A/V Engineer/Technician 

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide day-to-day configuration and support of technology in campus learning spaces and conference rooms, including tier-3 end user support. This role will assist with a variety of service management functions as well, including the development of procedural service documentation (i.e. instructions on equipment installation and configuration), and support documentation for end users.  

This role will independently configure A/V hardware including basic configuration of control systems, audio systems, switchers, etc. This role will also install and replace A/V hardware in campus learning spaces and conference rooms. The A/V Engineer/Technician will also assist with the coordination of project delivery, such as summer refreshes, while completing standard service/support responsibilities. 

A/V Engineer/Control Systems Programmer 

The primary responsibility of this position is to lead efforts to develop and deploy audiovisual control systems, video signal distribution, and audio signal processing systems for audiovisual installations across the University of Iowa.   

This position will work with a team of audiovisual designers, project managers, installers, and support technicians in the delivery of robust A/V systems across campus.  The A/V Engineer/Control Systems Programmer will also lead the coordination of project delivery, such as summer refreshes, while completing standard service/support responsibilities. 

For Both Levels: 

The person in this position will frequently move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.  

A valid US driver’s license and ability to meet the University of Iowa’s fleet safety requirements is required.  

This is a 100% onsite position.

Qualifications:  

A/V Engineer/Technician: 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to a total of typically 5 years of experience configuring, supporting, and troubleshooting audiovisual equipment. This could include: 

  • High school diploma or GED and typically 5 years of experience. 

  • Associate’s degree or technical diploma and typically 3 years of experience. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the position and typically 1 year of experience. 

  • Professional experience (typically 1 year or more) configuring, supporting, and troubleshooting audiovisual equipment including control, audio and video systems from a variety of vendors (Crestron, Extron, Biamp, etc.).Proficient in construction techniques. 

  • Experience supporting Windows personal computers and laptops in an enterprise setting. 

  • Basic knowledge of concepts around enterprise networks including DHCP, DNS and 802.1x authentication. 

  • Experience with Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other video-conferencing technologies in an audiovisual setting.  

  • Experience reading/interpreting A/V schematics and system diagrams. 

  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.  

  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and teamwork skills (including with technical peers).  

  • Physical ability to routinely move and transport audiovisual and computer equipment up to 50 pounds.  

Desirable Qualifications: 

  • AVIXA CTS certification is highly desirable. 

  • Experience terminating and troubleshooting low-voltage cables (Cat 5/6/7, coaxial, speaker, and/or control cable) 

  • Vendor certification from Extron, Crestron, Biamp or other audiovisual equipment manufacturers. 

  • Experience supporting audiovisual technology in a higher education or enterprise setting.   

  • Experience with a scripting language (Python, Lua, etc.) in a audiovisual programming environment. 

 

A/V Engineer/Control Systems Programmer: 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline or an equivalent combination of education and related experience in a technical field may also serve to meet this minimum requirement. 

  • Professional experience (typically 3 years or more) configuring/programming/audiovisual equipment including control, audio and video systems from a variety of vendors (Crestron, Extron, Biamp, etc). 

  • Experience with a scripting language (Python, Lua, etc) in an audiovisual programming environment.  

  • Experience configuring Windows personal computers for audiovisual system interactions. 

  • Working knowledge of concepts around enterprise networks including DHCP, DNS and 802.1x authentication. 

  • Strong experience configuring Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other video-conferencing technologies in an audiovisual setting.  

  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.  

  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and teamwork skills (including with technical peers).  

  • Physical ability to routinely move and transport audiovisual and computer equipment up to 50 pounds.  

 

Desirable Qualifications: 

  • AVIXA CTS certification is highly desirable. 

  • Experience developing audiovisual software in an object-oriented environment (C#, Java, etc) 

  • Vendor programming certification from Extron, Crestron, QSYS, Biamp or other audiovisual equipment manufacturers. 

  • Experience managing audiovisual projects or other IT projects. 

  • Experience supporting audiovisual technology in a higher education or enterprise setting.
