The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa is seeking a Clinical Research Education Specialist. Under the direction of the Clinical Research Services Quality Assurance and Education Officer and Faculty Leadership, this position is responsible for the establishment, implementation and ongoing educational professional development and training program for staff participating in clinical research trials conducted by HCCC and its members.

Duties to include:

Training & Education Program Development

  • Directs, develops and oversees a comprehensive on-boarding program and ongoing Clinical Research Services (CRS) educational training, working closely with clinical research leadership to identify team education needs.
  • Leads in the establishment of general research training documents to align with standard operating procedures, current workflows and federal and local research regulations.
  • Determines performance metrics and reporting criteria for the accurate measurement of education and training needs, including evaluation and assessment of educational and training efforts for continuous process improvement.
  • Performs regular needs analysis for training needs, providing solutions and recommendations as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains database of staff records of training activities.
  • Develops annual tracking reports to support equitable distribution of professional development opportunity across all CRS functional groups and employees.
  • Promotes research certification for clinical research professionals who meet eligibility criteria.
  • Attends meetings with functional group collaborators during SOP development to fully understand content and support on-boarding of new staff and new SOP release/revision communication to staff as warranted.
  • Provides the CRS Administrative Director with recommended annual budget for training and professional development program. 
  • Participates in the CRS QA Committee and HCCC Office of Cancer Center Enhancement and Training monthly meetings.
  • Perform special projects and other tasks as assigned.

Content Creation & Management

  • Identifies appropriate training platform for centralized training.
  • Manages platform associated content including creation, upload, organization, curation and implementation of education and training materials to be utilized by CRS staff, researchers, and other parties utilizing CRS services.
  • Collaborates with CRS leadership to develop training documents and presentations to be delivered to the larger team consistent with FDA guidelines, ICH and GCP regulations, OHRP, and institutional, guidelines, utilizing SMEs and other oncology and research specialists within the University and the Cancer Center.
  • Evaluates and updates curricula within Content Management System (CMS) and training documents to ensure contemporaneous content.
  • Manages CRS central training access and troubleshoots CMS platform issues and concerns, as well as identifies existing training solutions that fit the needs of the Cancer Center.
  • Updates and maintains methods to support ongoing learning and development, job satisfaction, and enrichment needs for CRS staff.
  • Works with CRS leadership to also develop and maintain orientation guide(s) for new hires, SOPs, training manual(s), routinely accessed clinical research documents, CRS standard templates, etc. 

Training & Education

  • Develops outcome-based job specific training objectives.
  • Works with CRS leadership to directly link training objectives to audit and monitoring findings and trends reported to the CRS.
  • Coordinates and implements orientation and onboarding of newly hired clinical research staff.
  • Provides CMS navigation training for all new and existing staff.
  • Leads ongoing training efforts of the CRS team and provides program training material and content or coordinates expert training on various relevant clinical research and related topics.
  • Develops skills and competency testing to evaluate staff comprehension and evaluate effectiveness of education provided.  
  • Advises supervisors regarding staff training/compliance issues.
  • Collaborates with MD research trainer to enhance education of investigators
  • Coordinates and facilitates continuous learning opportunities and professional development for CRS staff (Lunch and Learns, CE sessions, informal presentation by CRS SMEs, outside vendors, etc.)
  • Tracks annual educational professional development, training, and conference activities of trainees.
  • Participates in planning and executing workshops and conferences that meet the needs of CRS staff and other research partners. Coordinates all Continuing Education (CE) activities, including developing topics and dates for presentations, managing content for approval, and maintaining CE requirements for events.
  • Participates and supports the development of educational grants or funding programs aimed to provide resources to CRS staff and other research partners.
  • Educates faculty, staff and others about clinical research coordination methods and procedures employed in research studies; prepares educational materials for patients and other staff as needed to carry out protocol therapy.

Compliance & Metrics Reporting

  • Collaborates with CRS leadership and UIHC Informatics staff to develop and report measures to improve overall training compliance, onboarding times, and career advancement metrics. 
  • Develops queries and reports to ensure center-wide consistency of education and training of clinical trial staff.
  • Provides recommendations to CRS leadership for training plans, educational in-service opportunities, and other training and education related topics.
  • Tracks and forecasts annual educational professional development, training, and conference activities

Indirect supervision is received from the Pathology Laboratory Technical Consultant

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    A master’s degree with a science or education emphasis or an equivalent combination of education and experience that is directly related to the duties of the position.

2.    Demonstrated proficiency with academic software applications or Content Management Systems (CMS) such as ICON.

3.    Minimum of 5 years clinical research experience, which included therapeutic investigational protocol therapy and medical data management.

4.    Demonstrated ability to educate or train others.

5.    Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, follow-up, and multi-task with minimal supervision.

6.    Demonstrated organizational and project management skills

7.    Demonstrated initiative to lead and develop programs.

8.    Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across functions, levels, and departments towards shared objectives

9.    Knowledge of regulatory guidelines and procedures of oncology trials.

10.  Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

11.  The ability to occasionally assist with meetings and events outside of normal working hours which may include overnight travel.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Experience planning and/or organizing meetings or retreats.

2.    Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations.
