The Communications Specialist in the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) will be an integral member of the ICTS and Implementation Science Center (ISC). This position will effectively plan, develop, implement and assess communication and outreach efforts for ICTS using diverse materials and channels. The activities will meet a variety of goals, including building researcher awareness and usage of services and creating collaborators across the University and shared networks by targeting communications to build relationships with both internal and external audiences. This position will have responsibility to work collaboratively with affiliates and partners to communicate key messages.

Duties to include but not limited to:

  • Propose and implement ICTS and ISC communication strategies and develop content that best conveys key messages promoting ICTS and ISC services and activities.
  • Perform editing, accuracy review, and fact-checking of ICTS related posters, media content and featured writing.
  • Know ICTS, ISC and related community stakeholders and target audiences.
  • Work with ICTS and ISC leadership to create a media plan that facilitates relationships across networks each are involved with.
  • Gather feedback from committees to influence communications plan.
  • Analyze web usage to identify trends in media communication tools and social media.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of communication strategies, plans, and solutions for ICTS and related projects and programs.
  • Align and prioritize communications initiatives based on ICTS and ISC related strategic plan and goals.
  • Maintain accountability for use of resources and identify and recommend cost-saving measures.
  • Develop and present training sessions in use of content management system.
  • Attends and contributes to staff meetings to educate members about research findings and discuss ideas for branding and promotion of ICTS services.

About ICTS: The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in 2007 to support the work of investigators involved in clinical and translational science. Our mission is to accelerate translational science through programs to develop the translational workforce, to promote engagement of community members and other stakeholders, to promote research integration across the lifespan, and to catalyze innovative clinical and translational research. These efforts will lead to the development of novel therapies and healthcare delivery strategies, the integration of translational research and clinical practice, and, ultimately to measurable improvements in the health of Iowa and the nation.

This position may be eligible to participate in a hybrid(partially remote) work schedule after six months of employment and a satisfactory performance record. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa. Successful candidates who participate in remote work must comply with requirements of the remote work program and related policies.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications or similar field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 1 year of demonstrated experience in professional publishing for a consumer website.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with HTML, Adobe Creative Suite 6, Drupal and WordPress.
  • Working knowledge of relevant social media and messaging platforms.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects.
  • Ability to write clearly and succinctly for the web using best practices.
  • Superb collaborative, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal skills.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience creating integrated web content that promotes and sustains institutional business goals.
  • Advanced degree in journalism or related field.
  • Graphic design skills.
  • Experience in health and wellness writing.
  • Ability to analyze, present and make strategic recommendation on Web analytics using Google. Analytics, Piwik or other homegrown analytic dashboards.
  • Training in an enterprise-level content management system.
  • Planning, testing, and selecting appropriate applications for health care consumers.
