The University of Iowa Pentacrest Museum is hiring a dedicated Coordinator of Education and Engagement (100% appointment).

Reporting to the Director of Museums, the Coordinator of Education and Engagement (CEE), plays a leadership role in advancing the mission of the Museums by integrating the collection into the university’s curriculum. The CEE will serve as the primary liaison with university faculty regarding collaborative endeavors, developing pedagogy, and leading programmatic strategy for supporting student and faculty engagement with the collections. Working closely with the Director of Research Collections, the CEE will be responsible for coordinating collections engagement projects and creating intellectually rich and accessible interpretive approaches built around the Museums’ collections.

The CEE is charged with developing strategies, interpretations, and opportunities for learning engagement across multiple platforms, increasing faculty-student participation, and ensuring the delivery of relevant, intellectually engaging, and exciting mission-driven experiences, on-campus and online. The CEE plays a critical role in making the Museums a platform for creativity, critical thinking, curricular learning, and cultural engagement for The University of Iowa. They will also have the opportunity to:

  • Support the mission of the University and coordinates pathways for the academic community to connect with the museums’ collection in support of teaching and research.
  • In collaboration with the Director, establish long‐range vision, annual goals, objectives, and priorities for academic engagement.
  • Work closely with the curators: Collaborate with faculty, students, artists, and guest scholars to develop lesson plans, training sessions, and new interpretive approaches in impactful ways; Provide input during the development of exhibitions by playing an active role in planning and developing educational and interpretive components as they relate to exhibitions; Co-produce interpretive plans for museum.
  • Recruit and supervise student employees, museum attendants, and interns, and lead the development and implementation of creative educational and auxiliary programming for broad and diverse audiences presented in various formats.
  • Assist with developing gallery didactics in print and digital forms.
  • Identify funding opportunities, draft grant proposals, develop and oversees the portions of the annual budget in collaboration with the Director, and track expenditures to ensure adherence to set goals.

About the Department: The University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums (UIPM) are the Museum of Natural History and the Old Capitol Museum. The UIPM serves to strengthen the vital role of both museums in the educational, research, and engagement missions of the University enhancing, the campus-wide focus on cultural and environmental diversity.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in a field of study related to the sciences, humanities, education, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience is required
  • One year minimum of professional experience in a museum, art gallery, or similar nonprofit focused on art, culture, science and/or humanities public education and access
  • At least one year of direct supervision of student, volunteer, or professional employees
  • Ability to move, push, and pull more than 25 lbs.
  • May require some nights and weekends

Competencies Required:

  • Demonstrates an extensive proficiency level in the following competencies:
    • Demonstrated project history developing and implementing educational programs along with the knowledge of and commitment to current exhibition practices and collection stewardship policies
    • Demonstrated ability to promote collaborative teamwork, creativity, and open communication with a wide range of constituencies
    • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of equal access to information
    • Ability to foster positive working relationships, collaborating with supervisor and colleagues in a professional manner
    • Ability to concurrently manage, delegate, and execute multiple tasks to meet firm deadlines along with the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of duties with only general supervision or direction
    • Excellent writing, communication, and public speaking skills for multiple audiences
    • Excellent attention to detail
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Natural History, Natural Science, Education or related field
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience with increasing responsibility in a museum, art gallery, or similar nonprofit focused on art, culture, science and/or humanities public education and access
  • Familiarity with contemporary education practices
  • Experience in the development and implementation of strategic business goals and plans
  • Experience managing resources for educational/instructional programs including faculty, staff, etc.
  • Experience with grant proposals including grant writing, submission, and post-award management
  • A record of presentations, publications and/or service in professional organizations related to the candidate’s field of study and/or professional endeavors
  • Curatorial, university teaching, and grant-writing experience

Work Modality: This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

 

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Occasional night and weekend hours are required.

 

Compensation: $51,000 – $60,000 with Competitive Benefits
