The College of Law is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of International Affairs.  The Director of International Affairs will provide educational support services and career services for law students with a primary emphasis on the needs of international, foreign born, and non-traditional students. The candidate will develop and implement comprehensive programs and services for international and domestic students typically enrolled in, but not limited to, non-traditional law programs, such as: LLM, SJD, International JD (2 year program), and Master’s in Legal Studies. The candidate will have significant roles in recruiting and admissions, orientation and support throughout the educational program, and career placement for these students. The candidate will also assist with the Visiting Scholars Program.

Additional duties to include:

• Implement and support new programs and initiatives to support the transition of international and non-traditional students to Iowa Law

• Under advisement, develop strategic enrollment efforts to recruit international students

• Support current students by developing programs and services targeted toward academic and professional success, and serve as a resource for academic and nonacademic advising

• Meet with international and ASJD students in advance of registration to advise on course options and processes

• Plan and organize activities to integrate foreign students into the law school community and to learn about the U.S. Legal system, though, for example, visits to local courts

• Interpret and analyze foreign degree programs, admissions standards and scores; may screen application materials and recommend quality candidates to admissions review team; collaborate with admissions team to develop international recruiting strategies

• Collaborate with career services counselors to develop global employment opportunities for non-traditional students, provide counseling to students, assisting them in their efforts to secure or improve employment

• Work with the Director of the Visiting Scholars Program to respond to inquiries about the program, review applications, and serve as a main contact with the candidates.  This includes coordinating the immigration process with ISSS, organizing orientations, assisting with identifying funding resources, etc.

Required Qualifications:

• JD or Master’s Degree in Business, Counseling, Education, Student Services; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

• Experience (preferably 2-3 years) providing support services to international and/or domestic students

• Experience (preferably 2-3 years) leading and/or facilitating training or informative presentations to a diverse audience for informational or targeted goal purposes, achieving successful outcomes

• Knowledge of recruitment and assessment practices with ability to determine high quality international student candidates eligible for admittance in law degree programs

• Ability to identify campus and community resources in support of the unique needs of international students and facilitate a supportive environment for student well-being and success

• Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population


Desirable Qualifications:

• LLM or SJD

• Law Degree from a foreign law school

• Experience (preferably 1-3 years) practicing law in the United States

• Demonstrated knowledge of immigration requirements for international/foreign born students entering the U.S. for training, externships and employment

• Career Services experience (preferably 1-3 years) such as: law school career services department, recruitment experience for a law firm or an executive search firm, or comparable placement experience

• Study abroad experience or some international background

• Ability to travel internationally

• Fluency or proficiency in at least one language other than English
