The Float Clerk is responsible for reviewing and verifying documents for accuracy, addressing discrepancies, and providing administrative support for the unit. Additionally, the Float Clerk supports patients and families with navigation, responding to requests, and providing assistance during challenging situations, while maintaining professionalism and respect for varying needs and circumstances.

 

Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews, verifies, and maintains accuracy of various documents (e.g., reports, invoices, insurance cards) to ensure compliance with policies; addresses discrepancies and resolves issues. Checks patients in, provides information on policies and procedures, prepares and reconciles records, and ensures proper documentation and adherence to established guidelines
  • Integrates information and may run routine queries to generate or produce reports
  • Assigns, coordinates and reviews the work of other clerical personnel for conformance to established guidelines
  • Composes correspondence in response to routine inquiries frequently without instruction or review
  • Initiates and processes standardized forms related to area of assignment
  • Respond promptly to physician requests for family consultation and support
  • Assist families with navigation throughout the facility, and provide help with wayfinding, access to refreshments, and service recovery when necessary
  • Engage in sensitive, emotionally intelligent conversations with patients and families during times of stress or uncertainty
  • Remain aware of and respect varying family dynamics and legal considerations that may impact communication or decision-making

 

Percent of Time: 50%

Schedule: primarily 1500-1900 Monday through Friday, no holidays, weekends or nights

Pay Grade:  08

Minimum Eligibility Requirements: 

  • Any combination of related clerical office experience, related undergraduate education, and/or post high school clerical training that is the equivalent to two years of full-time employment

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to act as a liaison between the surgeon and family
  • Advocate the needs of the whole patient to include the parents and extended family
  • Support “way finding” needs within the hospital setting
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Experience with public relations and patient interaction
