The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) HR team is seeking an HR Specialist

This individual will provide transactional support within the CLAS Transaction Hub. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, accurate and timely processing of HR and payroll transactions, ensuring data integrity across multiple systems, and supporting compliance with University policies and procedures. This position will also advise and assist CLAS departments on HR Transaction processes, including appointments, terminations, payroll adjustments, and leave administration. In addition, this individual will also work closely with central University offices—including University Human Resources, Payroll Services, and the Office of the Provost—to coordinate processes, resolve issues, and ensure consistent and effective support for CLAS departments. The successful candidate will provide administrative support for data reporting, auditing, and documentation to support operational efficiency and workforce planning within CLAS. This position requires strong critical thinking skills and a high level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy and consistency in transactional processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Initiate, analyze, audit, and process a variety of HR transactions—including appointments, changes of status, leaves of absence, special compensation, and terminations—for fiscal, academic, and biweekly employees using the University’s HRIS system.
  • Gather and prepare data related to HR Transactions.
  • Provide support and assistance to University Departments on the HR Transaction system.
  • Assist with the development of and provide education/training to CLAS departments on correct process for transaction requests.

Education Required

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, Human Resources, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 1 year experience in Human Resources.
  • Demonstrate ability to meet deadlines, balance multiple priorities, and to ensure a high level of accuracy in work produced.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively transmit, receive and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods.
  • Proficient analytical skills including the ability to analyze a variety of data, determine validity, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
  • Ability to work with users at all levels of experience as a team member and as a self-motivated sole contributor.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Desired Qualifications

  • Working experience with electronic processing systems, such as Workflow.
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies and procedures.
  • Previous experience working in higher education.
