QUALIFICATIONS:

Distance and Online Education (DOE) will fill one open position at one of two levels.

Instructional Designer 2 will hold a working title of “Instructional Designer” while Instructional Designer 3 will hold a working title of “Lead Instructional Designer”. An Instructional Designer 3 will bring advanced proficiency and experience to the role and meet additional qualifications.

Minimum Education Required: 

  • Master’s degree in instructional design, learning sciences, curriculum and instruction, educational psychology, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be substituted (including applicable coursework/training in learning sciences/design).

Minimum Experience/Competencies Required:

  • Experience (6 months to 2 years) performing instructional design duties, including: providing advice on pedagogical principles, with demonstrated understanding of instructional design methodologies, quality online course design, andragogy, and effective teaching and learning techniques.
  • Experience (6 months to 2 years) working with learning management systems and online instructional technologies and tools that enhance the learning experience.
  • Experience building strong and lasting professional relationships, fostering collaboration, trust, and effective teamwork across diverse stakeholders.

Working proficiency in:

  • Ability to recommend and implement solutions to complex instructional development problems. Brainstorm innovative strategies and design instructional content to meet the learning needs of different types of learners and environments.
  • Evaluating academic assessment methods and instructional activities, assess research and instructional programs, and review student learning outcomes to ensure achievement of academic objectives and strategies.
  • Project management and organizational skills: ability to manage multiple projects or activities concurrently and effectively prioritize and allocate time and resources for successful project completion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills: effectively provide persuasive guidance to support best practices for effective course design and delivery.
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals in a constructive and collaborative manner, while appreciating the unique contributions of an inclusive workforce that brings together the talents of people across multiple identities.
  • Proficiently using standard (Microsoft) office software applications, graphic design software, and basic HTML.

To be considered for Instructional Designer 3 (Lead), you are required to have:

  • A minimum of 3 years professional experience (preferably 5+ years) working with faculty and staff as an instructional designer in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of effective teaching and learning techniques, online course design/andragogy, and curriculum development.
  • Experience with effectively advising faculty in research-based application of complex instructional design principles, quality online instruction and adult learning principles during the design and development of asynchronous, synchronous, and blended online courses. 

Desired Experience/Competencies for either level:

  • Professional experience (min. 1-3 years preferred) working directly with faculty and staff as an instructional designer in a higher education setting.
  • Experience presenting in front of an audience/delivering instructional and training content in various modalities. Prior face-to-face or online teaching experience.
  • Graphic design skills, multimedia expertise, with an understanding of accessible design, and user/experience design fields, and the impact of accessibility needs on digital tools and multimedia selection.
  • Ability to remain current on digital technology tools used to develop and support interactive teaching and learning, emerging applications of instructional technology, and trends in online education.
  • Experience designing, delivering, and facilitating faculty development/training programs in current evidence-based practices in the areas of instructional and online course design.
  • Extensive proficiency in various digital technology tools used in higher education settings to develop and support interactive teaching and learning, including Learning Management Systems, digital media recording and development, and synchronous meeting software (e.g., Canvas LMS - preferred, Panopto, Zoom, etc.).

Additional Details:

  • The anticipated hiring salary for this position is a range of $60,000 - $75,000. Reach out to the contact person to learn more about benefits, compensation practices, and career development opportunities.
  • This position is primarily on-campus and may be eligible for some flexibility and remote work (i.e., during break times and ad hoc) in alignment with dept policies and practices. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and comply with the remote work program and related policies.
