IT Support Consultant
This position is primarily responsible for providing direct support, consultation, guidance, and training to users, and to identify technical and data solutions for both the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science and its supported user community of researchers. Assist researchers with data needs through query design and consultations. This position will work with a wide variety of faculty, staff, and students to assist in their research efforts and will require strong communication skills and an understanding of the research process to facilitate technology solutions for research teams. Support the daily operations of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science and assist with technology planning to maximize user and organizational effectiveness.
Duties to include but not limited to:
- Provide IT implementation and maintenance support for a variety of research services and tools.
- Adhere to operational standards, organizational security, and licensing requirements.
- Independently test new tools, configurations, and services. Provide feedback regarding compatibility, performance, and effectiveness.
- Independently perform basic and complex helpdesk functions and/or direct user support.
- Investigate and troubleshoot applications and customer reported issues.
- Provide both basic and complex consultation to researchers and user groups. Development business requirements based on consultations and translate needs to technical teams. Triage and document complex requests into understandable requirements.
- Provide input and recommendations on organizational support procedures, guidelines, and policies.
- Provide both one-on-one instruction and group instruction utilizing appropriate technology.
- Develop course or training content.
- Maintain existing service-level documentation. Provide input in the development of new service-level documentation.
- Assist the implementation of approved projects, providing project support and services.
- Assist with maintaining current projects, changes and upgrades to systems and tools.
- Actively contribute to the planning process for developing operating procedures, guidelines, and policies.
- Make recommendations and changes based on customer support experience and feedback, advocating for customer needs.
About ICTS: The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in 2007 to support the work of investigators involved in clinical and translational science. Our mission is to accelerate translational science through programs to develop the translational workforce, to promote engagement of community members and other stakeholders, to promote research integration across the lifespan, and to catalyze innovative clinical and translational research. These efforts will lead to the development of novel therapies and healthcare delivery strategies, the integration of translational research and clinical practice, and, ultimately to measurable improvements in the health of Iowa and the nation.

- A Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Informatics, Instructional Technology, Information Science, Health Science related degree, or other related degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience in information technology support or healthcare may also serve to meet these minimum requirements.
- Experience, typically 1 - 3 years in IT Support, informatics, data and analytics, research IT, clinical health care, business relationship management or a combination of the above.
- Demonstrated experience with databases, healthcare data, research data collection, and electronical medical record data or a combination of the above.
- Demonstrated ability to use a systematic troubleshooting approach to identify and resolve technical problems.
- Experience with requirements elicitation and documentation for projects and initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; the ability to explain technology concepts to non-technical faculty, staff and students.
- Experience developing and maintaining reference documents for both external use (customers/clients) and internal use (knowledge management).
- Experience working on cross-functional teams.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience supporting informatics, data, analytics or information technology in a higher educational setting, academic healthcare, or academic research environment.
- Experience with Epic.
- Understanding of HIPAA, FERPA and FISMA.
- Experience with medical coding and medical terminology.
- Experience with Project Management fundamentals.
- Experience using the ITIL framework and service management tools.
