GENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Under direct supervision of a Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP), Nurse Manager, or designee, assists with patient care services.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists registered nurses and/or LIP’s in the delivery of patient care, with regard to patient condition and age.

2. Performs patient care in compliance with the Iowa Department of Public Health Paramedic Scope of Practice related to:

a. Maintaining Airway/Breathing

b. Assessment

c. Pharmacological Interventions

d. Emergency Trauma Care

e. Medical/Cardiac Care

3. Completes Point of Care (POC) testing.

4. Provides psychological support to the patient and family based on assessed needs.

5. Communicates any pertinent changes in patient condition or disposition and report unusual incidents. Performs related and routine clerical tasks pursuant to performing the aforementioned duties.

6. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of and ability to perform Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) procedures.

2. Knowledge of drug and medical terminology.

3. Knowledge of most common emergency drugs and their uses and usual doses.

4. Knowledge of institutional and unit policies, processes, and forms.

5. Ability to perform patient care as delegated.

6. Ability to transport monitored patients.

7. Ability to use a computer.

8. Ability to maintain and stock inventory.

9. Ability to alter work schedule to meet unit/patient needs.

10. Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

11. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, patients and the public.

12. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

13. Ability to treat patient issues with confidentiality.

Percent of Time:100%

Schedule: Monday-Friday 0600-1430, Takes call on a rotating schedule overnights, weekends and Holidays. Must have response time of 20-30 minutes to the hospital for on call.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

1. Graduation from high school, and

2. Current paramedic certification by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, and

3. Current course completion card in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider by the American Heart Association, and

4. Current course completion card in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by the American Heart Association
