Performance Improvement Engineer

 

The Quality Improvement Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is seeking a full-time Performance Improvement Engineer to develop and coordinate components of the UIHC Performance Improvement (PI) Program. The Performance Improvement Engineer will:

·    Facilitate improvement activities related to medication safety, facilitating the implementation of operational changes throughout the hospital utilizing PI methodologies, and serve as a resource to assist and train others on performance improvement methodologies and evidence-based patient safety and quality initiatives.

·    Provide all levels of management, physicians, and clinical staff with accurate and timely information for effective decision making utilizing internal and external decision support systems in the Quality Improvement Program.

 

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·    Facilitates improvement activities for medication safety and other initiatives as directed in the Quality Improvement Program.

·    Collaborates in the development of long-term strategies and methodologies for evaluation of processes and outcomes across the continuum of care including measurement, analysis, and reporting of data used in achieving goals identified in the UIHC strategic plan. Contact external peers/organizations for successful interventions/programs that have been proven effective.

·    Promote performance improvement principles throughout the organization. Support and provide visibility for performance improvement philosophies and tools.

·    Collect and retrieve data, design and use spreadsheets and databases for clinical and administrative decision making. Conduct basic and advanced analyses of UIHC performance on clinical processes and outcomes.  As it pertains to national registry databases, abstract reliable data from the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and facilitate improvement activities utilizing PI methodologies to provide all levels of management, physicians, and clinical staff with accurate and timely information for effective decision making utilizing internal and external decision support systems.  Reviews, evaluates, interprets and develops reports, and provides end-user assistance, involving analysis, identification of problem needs, designing solutions, and identifying required system adaptations.

·    Acts as a departmental representative in meetings involving hospital policy issues surrounding medication safety, performance improvement, decision support and utilization of hospital resources.

·    Promotes collaboration, decision making, and problem resolution through effective interactions or facilitation with members of the hospital organization.

·    Facilitates improvement/communication and analyzes UI Healthcare performance reports for/from select regulatory agencies or external reporting agencies (e.g. Vizient, Telligen, IHC, IHA, Joint Commission).

·    Prepares/presents educational programs on performance improvement, evidence based practice, or ongoing quality initiatives to clinical and UIHC staff.

·    Seeks opportunities to enhance own professional knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to one’s current position and/or to prepare for potential future roles and overall career development, e.g., speaking/poster presentations at local or national conferences, publications in journals/books, or certification in quality or performance improvement.

·    Participates in the hiring of professional and support staff.

·    Assumes special assignments as delegated by the Quality & Operational Improvement Manager/Director, QuIP.

Percent of Time: Full-time, 40 hour per week

Schedule: Some flexibility between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required Qualifications

 

·    A Master’s degree in a healthcare related field with 1-3 years’ experience in healthcare outcomes and performance improvement initiatives/techniques (which may include clinical care); or a Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related field with 3-5 years’ experience in healthcare outcomes and performance improvement initiatives/techniques (which may include clinical care); or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

·    Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Power Point and Excel; ability to format tables, retrieve data via queries, and create presentations via PowerPoint.

·    Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

 

Desirable Qualifications

 

·    A Bachelor’s degree in nursing. 

·    A current Iowa RN license.

·    Specific training and certification in performance improvement techniques e.g., Six Sigma Green or Black Belt. 

·    Professional certification related to healthcare quality (i.e. CPHQ, ASQ).

·    Previous clinical experience in an academic medical center.

·    Some knowledge of University and Regent policies, procedures, and regulations.
