The School of Planning and Public Affairs is seeking a Project Coordinator to manage the day-to-day operations of two grant-funded projects: Project Return, which aims to return Indian Boarding School records to survivors, their families and their Tribes; and Project Trust, which will produce toolkits about Native land policy as well as perform a land surveying pilot. The Project Coordinator will participate in the administration of the grants. Events and activities include but are not limited to: overseeing field researchers; liaising with Native American Tribes about the projects; supervising consultants tasked with generating digital portal for records requests; creating the appointment schedules and assisting the director of the lab as needed. Additional responsibilities and duties assigned as necessary to support the mission of the lab and student success in communication skill development. The position is a 75% time position. There will be travel involved.

This position is eligible for hybrid work (combination of on campus and remote) within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location

Job Duties and Tasks

  • Develop written communications, including website articles, community member spotlights, newsletters, and email blasts, and create templates for consistent messaging.
  • Oversee social media strategy and content creation, including sharing relevant scholarly/clinical information.
  • Coordinate and schedule Native Policy Lab meetings, including preparing meeting agendas and composing and disseminating meeting minutes as needed.
  • Assist with the planning, organizing, and execution of Native Policy Lab events.
  • Develop marketing materials such as brochures, flyers, and posters for distribution.
  • Manage field researchers, including providing them with records assignments and managing their invoices.
  • Plan travel for Native Policy Lab affiliates, including for Tribal convenings.
  • Evaluate requests and exercise discretion and judgment in providing confidential information to appropriate parties.
  • Aid in compiling project data to develop project reports.
  • Manage a team of four undergraduate students and one graduate student, including overseeing bi-weekly check-in meetings.
  • Additional job duties as assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Education or Equivalency Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Typically, one or more years of experience in marketing and communications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated by the ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors to provide excellent customer service and maintain working relationships.
  • Ability to balance multiple competing priorities.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic setting.
  • Demonstrated experience using Adobe products and Canva.
  • Working knowledge of issues and challenges related to Indian Country.
