The University of Iowa Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking a Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Coordinator. Within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, this position will facilitate patient safety and quality improvement (PSQI) activities in collaboration with the Director of PSQI to support high quality care delivery for both obstetrical and gynecologic patients in the ambulatory and inpatient settings. Activities include project planning and oversight, data abstraction and analysis, and supporting improvement activities. These activities support UI Healthcare’s commitment to delivering quality and safe care for patient populations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide project management oversight for departmental quality improvement (QI) initiatives, working closely with the PSQI director and unit-level leadership.
  • Perform QI project management tasks including chartering, driver diagrams, metric selection, data analysis and interpretation, QI activities, and day to day task management of projects.
  • Actively participate in unit, departmental and/or intradepartmental committees as applicable to the role.
  • Support the PSQI director in facilitating case reviews of adverse events, such as severe maternal morbidity and unexpected newborn outcomes, and attending to action items resulting from these reviews.
  • Establish reliable and efficient processes for the collection of data components from the electronic medical record by working in collaboration with reporting teams from HCIS and QuIP.
  • Evaluate the accuracy of clinical data entry and provide feedback for improvement in data entry quality.
  • Utilize software applications to evaluate metrics and trends over time to allow for recognition of signals and performance changes over time.
  • Assist with evaluating service line performance across a variety of clinical outcomes, including unit or clinic, division, and provider-level metrics to monitor for general performance, outliers, and champions.
  • Employ appropriate techniques for maintaining team enthusiasm, energy and focus.
  • Develop and maintain a positive, collaborative relationship with project stakeholders.
  • Maintain reliable and regular communication with PSQI director, unit-level, and departmental leadership.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff clinical departments, the Quality Improvement Program (QuIP), Nursing, Health Information Management, and Health Care Information Systems. 

Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in healthcare-related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

 Experience Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary team and collaborate effectively with physicians, staff, patients/families and other internal and external customers
  • Experience as a team or project leader for a multidisciplinary team
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement and patient safety.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years quality-related experience
  • Basic statistical knowledge
  • Previous experience in an academic medical center
  • Specific training in quality improvement methodology (e.g. IHI, Lean, Six Sigma, DMAIC). Formal training can occur following hire.
  • Professional certification related to healthcare quality (e.g. CPHQ, C-ONQS)
