The Department of Pathology is seeking a Quality and Operational Improvement Engineer (working title: Quality Assurance Coordinator) to design, organize and coordinate informatics and quality system program activities for the Department of Pathology. This role will lead the evaluation and implementation of quality assurance programs, and ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulatory and accrediting agencies.  This position is 100% time, Monday-Friday, 1st shift between the hours of 0700-1700.

This position will be mainly based at the Medical Center University location with some days at the North Liberty Campus. There will be occasional travel to other off-site location for point-of-care quality oversight as needed. 

 Duties to include:

  • Develops audit tools and performs internal audits
  • Develops and participates in educational training for ancillary testing staff
  • Participates in quality and operational improvement initiatives
  • Participate in the oversight of point of care testing performed off-site and in the hospital setting
  • Participates in the research and development of newly requested testing

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited college or university with specialized training in laboratory medicine, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Reasonable (1-3 years) clinical laboratory experience in a CLIA-certified laboratory.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License, plus the ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standards (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V, Chapter 19).
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with effective leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, to meet deadlines efficiently, to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and to be highly self-motivated.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in a laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
  • Experience with instrumentation validation, troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the regulations and accrediting standards of the following agencies: CMS, Joint Commission and/or CAP.
